Interview with Valerio Massi

  1. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  2. A: I always go fully digital: analog sound MUST be in our ears; we have to study analog, to master transients like analog gear is supposed to, to reach that smoothness in the high end, but if we practice and practice and practice we can achieve this goal: analog sound, but full itb. That's my sound

  3. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  4. A: I promise my clients will NEVER be disappointed. I'm from Rome: as well as I can cook an astonishing carbonara, I can do astonishing mixes and masters

  5. Q: How would you describe your style?

  6. A: CLA style with an Italian spicy taste

  7. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  8. A: Saturation, compression, ssl style eq, and more saturation

  9. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  10. A: I try to maximize the artist's work: I add punch, definition and an "in your face" philosophy, but I always try to respect the artist vision of his own work.

  11. Q: What's your typical work process?

  12. A: Once I organized the session in my own template, I'm used to start from drums and bass, then guitars, piano, synths, pads, whatever; I bring on the vocals at last, because I leave the best as final dish. Every song I mix, I approach it as it should be my best and last work of my life

  13. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  14. A: I'm mainly inspired by CLA and Andrew Scheps as audio engineer. As guitarist, I developed my skills by studying John Petrucci, Alex Lifeson, Eric Clapton, Steve Hackett and David Gilmour styles
