Interview with Ali Rusteen

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: One project I’m especially proud of was creating original music for a short-form video where the brief was intentionally minimal and open-ended. My role was to translate a rough concept into a clear musical direction, then compose, produce, and mix a cue that supported the visuals without overpowering them. The project required fast iteration and close collaboration, and the final result fit seamlessly into the edit while still carrying emotional weight. I’m proud of it because it shows how music can quietly elevate a project when it’s shaped around context and purpose.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: At the moment, I’m working on short-form music for ads, branded videos, and social media content, focusing on modern, cinematic, and mood-driven cues. I’m also refining my demo catalog and workflow to keep delivery fast and adaptable for different platforms and client needs.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: I don’t recommend specific SoundBetter providers by name, because every project has different needs and fit matters more than reputation alone. Instead, I encourage clients to look for providers with strong reviews, clear communication, and a portfolio that matches the style and usage they’re targeting. That approach helps ensure a good match for both quality and working style.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Digital, for speed and flexibility. A modern digital workflow lets me work efficiently, revise quickly, and deliver consistent, high-quality results on deadline. If an analog feel or texture is needed, I recreate that character intentionally rather than being limited by the process.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: My promise is clear communication, reliable timelines, and music that fits the brief. I’ll listen carefully, deliver on time, and refine the work until it supports your project in the most effective way — with no surprises and no unnecessary friction.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: What I enjoy most is turning a vague idea or brief into something clear and usable. I like the problem-solving side of music — finding the right mood, structure, and energy so the music actually supports the project and makes everything else work better.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: Clients most often ask how quickly I can deliver and how many revisions are included. My answer is that timelines are confirmed upfront based on the project’s scope, and revisions are included to make sure the music fits the brief. The goal is always to get it right efficiently, with clear communication and no surprises.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: A common misconception is that music production is just about making something sound cool. In reality, most of the work is about understanding context — the message, the visuals, the audience, and the deadline — and shaping the music so it supports all of that clearly and effectively.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: I usually ask about the project’s goal, intended mood, and where the music will be used. I also confirm timing (length, cutdowns, deadline), any reference tracks, and whether the music needs to sit under dialogue or vocals. These details help me move quickly and deliver something that fits the brief from the start.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Look for someone who listens carefully to your brief and understands the context your music will live in. Clear communication, realistic timelines, and responsiveness matter just as much as sound quality. The best results come from treating the music as part of the bigger picture — supporting the story, visuals, or message rather than competing with them.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: Logic Pro X, a reliable laptop, an Apollo Twin X, a good pair of reference headphones, and a simple MIDI keyboard. With those five, I could write, produce, and finish music anywhere — even on a desert island.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I started as a songwriter and producer, gradually expanding into production, mixing, and composition as my projects grew more diverse. Over the years, I’ve worked with independent artists and content-driven projects, which led me toward short-form and visual-focused music. I’ve been producing music for several years, with a growing focus on commercial, branded, and video-based work where clarity, mood, and efficiency matter most.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: My style is modern, cinematic, and mood-driven. I focus on clean production, strong atmosphere, and emotional clarity, creating music that supports visuals and storytelling without overpowering them. The goal is always to feel intentional, on-brand, and usable in real-world contexts like ads, video, and digital content.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I’d love to work with artists like Bon Iver or ODESZA because they approach music as atmosphere and storytelling, not just songs. Their work balances emotion, restraint, and modern production in a way that translates well across records, visuals, and branded content — which is the kind of creative space I enjoy working in.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Always make decisions in context. A sound that feels impressive solo can fight the vocal, dialogue, or visuals once everything plays together. Build and adjust your production while listening to the full mix so every element serves the bigger picture.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I usually work on short-form, mood-driven music for ads, branded videos, and social media content. This includes cinematic, modern pop, and electronic-influenced cues designed to support visuals, sit under dialogue, and deliver emotion quickly in 15–60 second formats.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: My strongest skill is translating a brief into music quickly and clearly. I’m especially good at creating the right mood and structure for a project, making sure the music supports visuals or dialogue, feels on-brand, and works in real-world use — not just in isolation.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I bring a strong sense of mood, structure, and clarity. My focus is on translating an idea or brief into music that feels emotionally grounded, supports the story, and works in a real-world context — whether that’s under dialogue, visuals, or vocals. I’m detail-oriented, collaborative, and focused on delivering music that serves the project, not my ego.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: My process starts with a clear brief, references, and an understanding of the intended mood, timing, and usage. I then compose and produce an initial draft quickly, usually within the agreed timeline. After feedback, I make revisions to align the music with the project’s needs and finalize the track, delivering clean mixes, cutdowns, and stems if required. Communication stays simple and efficient throughout.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: My studio is a streamlined, in-the-box setup focused on clean production and fast turnaround. I work primarily in Logic Pro X with an Apollo Twin X interface, using a curated set of professional plugins and virtual instruments. This setup allows me to work efficiently, deliver broadcast-ready audio, and quickly adapt projects based on client feedback.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: I’m inspired by producers and composers who balance emotion with clarity and strong storytelling, such as Bon Iver, ODESZA, London Grammar, RY X, and Coldplay’s modern production work. I also draw inspiration from cinematic composers like Nils Frahm and Ludovico Einaudi for their use of space, texture, and restraint.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: I most often create short-form music for ads, branded videos, and social media content. This usually involves composing 15–60 second cues that support visuals, sit well under dialogue, and match a specific mood or brand identity. Clients typically request fast turnaround, a few revisions, and multiple cutdown versions for different platforms.
