Interview with Abel Urbina

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: One project I’m especially proud of is a track I produced for an up-and-coming artist. The artist came to me with a rough idea, but we completely transformed it together. It started as a basic melody and evolved into an atmospheric, melodic house track with intricate sound design and a powerful drop. My role was to handle the full production — from arranging the song, creating the sound design, and mixing and mastering to ensure the track had the right energy and clarity. The most fulfilling part was working closely with the artist to bring their vision to life while adding my personal touch. It was a real collaborative effort, and the track ended up being one of their most successful releases, getting significant attention on platforms like Spotify. What made this project special was the connection we built throughout the process, and seeing the artist’s excitement when the track was finished and ready to share with the world. It’s a reminder of how important collaboration is in bringing out the best in a song.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Right now, I’m working on my debut EP, which has been a huge passion project for me. It’s a collection of tracks that really showcase my sound and the direction I want to take as an artist. I’m also collaborating with a few emerging artists, helping them refine their tracks and bring their visions to life. It’s exciting to be involved in both my own music and working with talented creators, making sure each project sounds polished and unique. Alongside that, I’m constantly improving my skills and experimenting with new techniques to stay fresh and innovative in my productions.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: While I haven’t personally worked with everyone on SoundBetter, I know there are many talented professionals here who bring unique skills to the table. Depending on the needs of my clients, I would definitely recommend checking out [Insert Name] if you're looking for expertise in [specific area, e.g., vocal production, mixing, mastering, sound design, etc.]. They have a great track record and specialize in creating high-quality work. That said, I always strive to provide everything you need within my own skill set. If there's ever something I can't help with directly, I'll make sure to point you in the right direction to find the perfect match for your project!

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: I appreciate both analog and digital in different ways, and I believe each has its unique strengths. Digital production is essential for the flexibility and precision it offers. With DAWs, plugins, and virtual instruments, I can experiment and create with an unmatched level of convenience. Digital tools also give me the ability to manipulate sounds easily, use a vast array of effects, and streamline the production process. Plus, digital offers limitless possibilities for creativity and speed, making it perfect for modern electronic music. That said, I love the warmth and character that analog gear brings to a track. Analog gear can add a certain depth, texture, and unpredictability that’s hard to replicate with digital tools. Whether it’s through analog synths or vintage outboard gear, there’s a unique warmth that can make a sound feel more alive and tactile. Ultimately, I see both analog and digital as complementary. I lean on digital for its flexibility and convenience, but I often incorporate analog elements when I want to add that extra character or warmth to a sound. It’s about using the best of both worlds to create a final product that feels unique and polished.

  9. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  10. A: The biggest misconception about what I do is that music production is just about making a catchy melody or creating a beat. In reality, it’s a much more intricate process. I’m not only crafting sounds, but I’m also deeply involved in arranging, mixing, and shaping the track to ensure it tells a cohesive story and creates the right emotional impact. It’s about taking raw ideas and transforming them into a polished, professional piece that resonates with listeners. Also, many think producers just work alone, but collaboration is key. I spend a lot of time working closely with artists to bring their vision to life, whether it’s refining melodies, choosing the right sounds, or experimenting with new elements. It’s not just about technical skills — it’s about understanding the artist’s message and making sure it’s communicated effectively through the music.

  11. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  12. A: 1. What is your vision for this track? This helps clarify the overall mood, energy, and style they want to achieve. 2. Do you have any reference tracks or artists whose sound you’d like to emulate? Knowing what type of sound they’re inspired by gives you a clearer direction in terms of production style. 3. What specific elements do you want to focus on? Whether it's the beat, melody, vocals, or overall vibe, understanding their priorities ensures the track aligns with their vision. 4. Are there any specific genres or subgenres you're aiming for? This helps you understand whether they're looking for something more mainstream or niche, and helps define the boundaries of the project. 5. Do you have any particular song structure in mind? (e.g., intro, build-up, drop, outro) Knowing their preferred structure helps create a cohesive, flowing track that meets their expectations. 6. What is the intended use of the song? Whether it’s for a commercial release, a personal project, or a performance, this shapes how you approach the production. 7. Who is your target audience? This helps ensure the track resonates with the right listeners, whether it’s for a festival crowd or a more intimate vibe. 8. Do you have any deadlines or specific milestones for this project? Knowing their timeline helps you prioritize and manage the project efficiently. 9. What’s your preferred method of communication throughout the project? Establishing a communication channel ensures smooth collaboration throughout the production process. 10. Are you interested in full production, mixing/mastering, or both? This clarifies the scope of work, so you know whether you’re handling the entire track or just certain elements.

  13. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  14. A: If you're looking to hire a producer, my best advice is to be clear about your vision and goals from the start. Here are a few things to keep in mind: Know Your Sound and Style: It’s helpful to have an idea of the sound you’re going for. Whether it’s a specific genre or vibe, sharing references or examples of tracks you like will give me a better understanding of what you want. The more direction I have, the better I can tailor the production to match your vision. Communication is Key: Be open to sharing feedback throughout the process. Collaboration is essential — the more I know about what you’re looking for, the better I can bring your ideas to life. Regular check-ins and discussions about the progress will ensure we’re on the same page. Be Patient and Trust the Process: Great music takes time. I’ll work hard to make sure every element is polished and that the final track is something you’re proud of. Trust in the process, and let me bring my expertise to the table while staying aligned with your goals. Understand the Revisions Process: Every project can go through a few rounds of revisions to make sure it’s exactly what you want. Make sure to provide clear, constructive feedback so we can get the best results. Be Open to New Ideas: Sometimes, a producer might bring a fresh perspective or a new idea that can elevate the track in unexpected ways. Don’t be afraid to let the creative process flow — I’m here to help you take your music to the next level! By having a clear vision, open communication, and trust in the collaboration, we can make the best possible track together!

  15. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  16. A: If I were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, they would be: Laptop with DAW (Ableton Live or Logic Pro X) – I’d need my laptop to stay productive and continue making music, no matter the location. With a DAW installed, I could create, arrange, and mix on the go. MIDI Controller (Akai MPK Mini) – A compact and versatile MIDI controller to help with melodies, beats, and quick sketches. It’s lightweight, portable, and a key tool for creativity. Headphones (Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro) – To ensure high-quality audio when mixing, even in a remote setting. They’re perfect for precise listening and sound analysis. Audio Interface (Focusrite Scarlett 2i2) – For optimal sound quality when recording or playing back audio, essential for both production and monitoring. Portable Solar Charger – While not technically production gear, a portable solar charger would be necessary to keep all my devices powered up while on the island. Creativity needs energy! With these five essentials, I’d be able to continue producing music, experimenting with new ideas, and staying connected to my craft, no matter where I am.

  17. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  18. A: My journey in music production started over 15 years ago, originally inspired by my love for electronic music and sound design. I began experimenting with production software and learning the ropes of music theory, sound synthesis, and mixing. Over time, I started creating my own tracks and sharing them online, which helped me build an audience and connect with other artists. As I developed my skills, I began collaborating with emerging artists and working on a range of projects, from ghost production to full track creation. My passion for pushing boundaries in sound design led me to specialize in Future Bass, Melodic House, and Progressive EDM, genres where I feel I can best express my creative vision. Today, I’ve had the privilege of working with various artists and have released music that’s been streamed over 70K times on Spotify. I’m constantly evolving and expanding my skill set, with my debut EP in the works, aiming to take my music to the next level.

  19. Q: How would you describe your style?

  20. A: My style is a blend of emotive, cinematic soundscapes and high-energy, festival-ready beats. I specialize in Future Bass, Melodic House, and Progressive EDM, with a focus on creating deep atmospheres that build into powerful drops. I aim to evoke strong emotions through my music, using intricate sound design, rich melodies, and dynamic builds that keep the listener engaged from start to finish. I like to experiment with a variety of textures and sonic layers to give my tracks a unique, polished edge, while maintaining the energy and drive that makes them perfect for the dancefloor or festival crowd. Overall, my style is emotionally charged, dynamic, and always evolving, bringing fresh ideas while staying true to the essence of electronic music.

  21. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  22. A: I’d love to work with Porter Robinson, because his ability to blend emotional depth with dynamic, festival-ready energy is something I deeply admire. His sound is not only innovative but also incredibly personal, and I’d love to contribute to a project that combines cutting-edge sound design with emotional storytelling. Additionally, I respect how he’s constantly evolving his sound while staying true to his artistic vision. Working with an artist like Porter would be an exciting opportunity to create something truly unique and impactful — merging my production style with his visionary approach to music.

  23. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  24. A: One of the most effective tips I can share is to always focus on the arrangement early in the process. It’s easy to get lost in sound design or perfecting individual sounds, but the core structure of the track is what keeps everything together. Start with a rough arrangement — intro, verse, build-up, drop, breakdown, and outro — even before you dive deep into sound design. This way, you’ll have a clear vision of how the song flows and can make decisions about the mood and energy at every point. Once the structure is locked in, you can focus on adding detail to each section, knowing it fits perfectly within the bigger picture.

  25. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  26. A: I typically work on a wide range of EDM subgenres, including: Future Bass – Crafting emotive melodies and powerful drops that connect with listeners on a deep level. Melodic House & Progressive House – Creating atmospheric tracks with uplifting builds and dynamic, danceable energy. Techno – Producing darker, hypnotic beats with intricate sound design and pulsating rhythms. Electro/Big Room – Focused on high-energy, festival-ready tracks that get crowds moving. Dubstep & Trap – Delivering hard-hitting drops and intricate soundscapes with a heavy, bass-driven focus. While these are the genres I specialize in, I’m also open to working on other electronic and pop-influenced styles, as long as the vision aligns. My goal is to help you bring your sound to life, regardless of the genre!

  27. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  28. A: My strongest skill is my ability to blend creative sound design with technical precision. I excel at crafting unique, festival-ready sounds that resonate emotionally with listeners. Whether it’s creating dynamic drops, atmospheric intros, or intricate soundscapes, I’m able to shape each element of a track to fit perfectly within the overall production. I’m also highly skilled in mixing and mastering, ensuring that every track is polished and ready for release. My attention to detail allows me to deliver high-quality music that translates well across various platforms and listening environments. At the core of everything, I bring a deep understanding of what makes a track connect with listeners, which allows me to produce music that stands out while staying true to the artist’s vision.

  29. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  30. A: I bring creativity, precision, and emotion to every song I work on. Here's what you can expect when collaborating with me: Unique Sound Design: I craft original sounds that enhance the character of your track, whether it’s a catchy lead, a deep bassline, or atmospheric elements. I strive to create sounds that are not only fresh but also help your song stand out. Emotional Depth: I believe music should connect emotionally with the listener. I focus on creating melodies and harmonies that evoke feelings, whether it’s the uplifting vibe of a Future Bass drop or the darker, intense atmosphere of Progressive Techno. Festival-Ready Energy: I know how to create tracks that get people moving. From epic drops to dynamic builds, I bring a level of energy to the song that translates well on stage or in the club. Professional Mixing & Mastering: My attention to detail ensures that every element of your song is balanced and polished. I provide a mix that translates well across different devices, from headphones to festival speakers, ensuring the track sounds its best no matter where it’s played. Collaborative Spirit: I bring a flexible and collaborative approach. I listen to your vision, provide creative input, and work closely with you to ensure the final product is something you’re proud of. Your satisfaction is my priority, and I always encourage feedback throughout the process. Unique Artistic Vision: I bring a fresh perspective and a personal touch to each track, making sure the sound matches your style while adding something new and exciting. I’m passionate about helping you achieve your creative goals and ensuring the song sounds exactly how you imagined.

  31. Q: What's your typical work process?

  32. A: My work process is designed to ensure clear communication, creativity, and high-quality results from start to finish. Here’s how I typically approach a project: Initial Consultation: I start by discussing your vision for the track — whether it’s a full production, a remix, or just mixing and mastering. This helps me understand the style, vibe, and specific goals you have in mind. I encourage sharing reference tracks or any sketches you’ve made to better align with your vision. Pre-Production: Once I have a clear direction, I begin by creating a rough structure for the track, including key elements like the intro, build-up, drop, and breakdown. This stage includes experimenting with melodies, chords, and rhythm. Sound Design & Composition: I start designing the main sounds — creating unique leads, basslines, and effects that fit the genre and style we’re going for. I’ll work on developing the track’s overall vibe, layering different elements to create depth and energy. Arrangement & Production: I then focus on the arrangement, bringing all the sections together, ensuring smooth transitions between parts. This includes finalizing the build-ups, drops, breakdowns, and any other significant moments in the track. Mixing: Once the structure is in place, I move to mixing, balancing all elements for clarity and cohesiveness. I fine-tune each layer, EQ, compress, and add effects as needed to make the track sound professional and ready for release. Mastering: After mixing, I provide a final mastering pass to optimize the track for all listening platforms, ensuring it sounds great on everything from headphones to festival speakers. The goal is to make the track sound loud, clear, and polished. Feedback & Revisions: Once the track is complete, I send it over for your review. You’ll have the opportunity to provide feedback and request any revisions. I offer 2 rounds of revisions to ensure it matches your expectations. Final Delivery: After revisions, I deliver the final project files in your preferred format (WAV, MP3, stems, etc.) ready for release. Throughout the process, I maintain open communication to ensure we’re on the same page and your vision is being realized. My goal is to create music that stands out, both emotionally and sonically, while providing a smooth, collaborative experience.
