Interview with Sage Weeber

  1. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  2. A: I promise to give you the highest quality version possible. Down to the drumhead and microphone. It's time to change people's perception of the "over complicated" live drum process.

  3. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  4. A: People think that live drums are inconvenient. A lot of people have bad experiences with live drums not hitting the mark. I'm here to change that.

  5. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  6. A: What is your idea that may seem too far out of reach? Let's start there and make it happen.

  7. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  8. A: Don't be afraid of your ideas! No idea is bad, might just need a little love.

  9. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  10. A: - Pair of sticks - Zildjian Reflex Pad - Funky Primer Drum Book - Earplugs - Solar Powered Flashlight

  11. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  12. A: This has been my only career path! I started playing at the age of 4 years old. Started touring at 12, and have been doing the same thing ever since.

  13. Q: How would you describe your style?

  14. A: I would say my style is; Tight, yet dynamic with intensity. If that makes sense?

  15. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  16. A: Play the song, not your version of it.

  17. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  18. A: Mainly, Rock, Metal, and Pop.

  19. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  20. A: Coming up with creative ideas, and taking notes from the artist themselves. Blending mine, and theirs to create the outcome. At the end of the day, it's their song!

  21. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  22. A: I feel as if I bring my own voice to the song. Kind of a game of; how can I enhance this with my knowledge, yet not step on the other players toes?

  23. Q: What's your typical work process?

  24. A: First, I start by laying out the song in my DAW. Labeling parts and giving the song entirely a couple passes to listen. Really, to just digest the vibe and think creatively how I can bring my own voice to it; without stepping on others. Next, I pick drums and get tones I feel would enhance the song. Then, I start tracking! Going part-by-part and really locking in my ideas / trying new ones. Lastly, I start editing the drums so the mixing engineer has to do as least as possible. Helping the process move smoother!

  25. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  26. A: Ranging from an entire array of drums like; SJC, OCDP, Ludwig, Gretsch, DW, Pearl, and Q Drums. You can really find the exact tone you're looking for. Various cymbal sizes and models from Zildjian. Ranging from 12" cymbals, all the way up to 24" cymbals. Last but not least, mics. I have a handful of selections from; Shure, Telefunken, Sennhesier, Audix, and various boutique companies.

  27. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  28. A: I'm a huge fan of movie scores actually. People like Brian Tyler and Danny Elfman really inspire me every day to step up my game as a creative. Not just with drum parts, but also with how everything fits together as a whole sonically.

  29. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  30. A: Fully-remote drum tracking from Los Angeles, CA. When clients send me their songs to play drums on; I can easily record "day-of" and have a tracked, edited, multi-stem folder of the recording as soon as two days; right back to them.
