Interview with Joseph Feinstein

Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: My own project (NUVILICES) which I'm building up at the moment is the part of my life that I put my entire heart and soul into. I am writing, producing and singing the songs, so all of the emotion and effort I put in stays raw and authentic. It is the best thing I've done so far.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: At the moment I am working with a management who is sending me constantly to sessions with other writers and producers (often Grammy candidates), mostly writing songs for other artists. Currently I'm focusing on my new artist project NUVILICES.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: I haven't asked anybody to do something for me yet on SB.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: In my case digital since I don't use any analog synths or comps. In general analog, nothing beats quality hardware.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: Radio-ready toplines and lyrics on their tracks. If it doesn't suit I'll work on it until it does.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Being creative 24/7 and doing what I love for a living is something I would never trade for anything!
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: If they can release the songs with my vocals. Usually yes, but only if it was agreed upon beforehand.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: I'm not looking for a feature position on a track, I provide the track with commercially usable toplines and lyrics. If you think my voice fits the conversation continues.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: If they have a certain idea or concept for the vocals.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Prepare an instrumental with bpm and adjusted to the first beat so I can start working instantly. Reference tracks and visions for the track won't hurt.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Laptop, interface, mic, small keyboard, guitar
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: A writing session with Ryan Tedder would be one of my dream scenarios.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: It was always clear to me that I'm going to become a musician since I took violin and piano lessons from the age of 4. At some point in my teenage years I switched from violin to guitar and and started singing to it. This lead me to study music production and songwriting. I believe I didn't have any other choice :)
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Go with your first impulse. Try to develop your first idea and bring it to perfection. I believe the first idea we have in mind is the one we truly want to work. So make it work.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Melodies, vocal processing, vocal mix
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: A good instrumental is sometimes not enough to fully convey emotions and get the listeners attention. I am bringing the melody and lyrics that touches the audience and makes him or her come back to the song.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I listen to the given track and let my phone record my first impulses for the melody. 9/10 times it's the one I'm going for in the end. As soon as the topline is stable I look for a catchy theme and lyrics - the rest is history.

A: Blackbear, The Weeknd, Troye Sivan, Skrillex, Lauv

A: Pop, EDM, RnB, House

A: I have a small home recording studio containing Logic Pro X, Yamaha S7 monitors, Scarlett 2i2, RODE NT1 mic and several guitars and midi keyboards
