Interview with Emilio Meneses Garcia
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: It’s hard to pick just one, but I really enjoyed working on a short film based on a story by Julio Cortázar, directed by Nicanor Montes. I handled the full sound design, music composition, and final mix—an experience that pushed me creatively and technically. I’m also proud of the ongoing work I’m doing with producer Alejandro Jiménez, where we’ve collaborated with internationally recognized artists. With Alex, I take on vocal production, co-production tasks, and more. Honestly, every project I’ve done carries a sense of pride—I always give my all, and each one has shaped me in different ways.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Currently finishing the mix and sound design for a short film, plus a few music production gigs with artists in Mexico and France
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both. Analog for warmth and character; digital for flexibility and precision. I love blending them.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: To treat each project as if it were my own, with care, detail, and total commitment.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: The feeling of doing what I love and getting paid for it is already a gift—but what really moves me is working with something invisible, intangible… sound. It’s pure vibration, and somehow, it makes me vibrate too.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: They often ask: “Can you make it sound professional but still ‘human’?” My answer: absolutely—that’s my favorite kind of work.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That mixing is just about levels and EQ. It’s really about shaping emotion and guiding the listener’s experience.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What’s the story behind this track? What do you want people to feel when they hear it?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Know what you want to feel, even if you don’t know how it should sound. The right collaboration starts with honest communication.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: My guitar, laptop with Ableton and Pro Tools, Apollo x4, a pair of headphones, and a field recorder. Inspiration strikes in nature too.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I’ve been a musician and composer for over 15 years. My path started as a guitarist, then evolved into music production, mixing, and eventually sound design for film.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Emotive, cinematic, and organic. I like when a piece feels alive—textured, honest, and spacious.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I’d love to work with Ludwig Göransson. His ability to merge orchestral depth with modern sound design is on another level. There’s something cinematic and emotional in his approach that really resonates with the kind of storytelling I aim for in my own work.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Less is often more. Leave space for the track to breathe—it’s in the silence where emotion often lands hardest.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: A wide range: Latin, indie, cinematic, ambient, and alternative. I love projects that blend organic and electronic textures.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Translating emotion into sound—whether it’s through mix decisions, guitar phrasing, or a full cinematic soundscape.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: A sense of narrative, depth, and emotional connection. I aim to elevate the story behind the music, not just polish the sound.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I start by understanding the emotion and intention behind the piece. Whether it’s a film or a song, I first listen deeply, sketch ideas, and then refine them layer by layer—balancing intuition and technical precision.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: My setup is hybrid: I use an Apollo x6 interface, a variety of UAD plugins, Izotope, Waves, calibrated monitors (Focal + KRK Sub), and a treated space optimized for 5.1 surround mixing. I work in Ableton and Pro Tools depending on the project.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I draw inspiration from artists like Ludwig Göransson, Trent Reznor, and Gustavo Santaolallafor their emotional depth, and from producers like Danny L Harle and Jack Antonoff for their sonic clarity and philosophy in mixing.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I usually work on full audio post-production for short films and audiovisual projects—mixing, sound design, and original music. I also collaborate as a session guitarist and composer for artists and sync libraries.
