Jon O'Connell

Producer, Mixing Engineer

Jon O'Connell on SoundBetter

I have a passion for mixing great music, especially folk, acoustic, electronica and have worked on a wide range of productions with incredible and varied artists.

I am a musician, producer and mixing engineer from the west coast of Ireland, currently residing in the Adirondack region of New York. I’m from the home of traditional music in county Clare and have been steeped in songs, tunes, dancing and poetry from a young age, and involved with the live music scene since I started gigging at 14 years old. On my music journey I also studied jazz at Newpark Jazz College in Dublin. My instruments are bass (electric and double), guitar, mandolin, banjo. I have gigged extensively, including tours in the US, Russia, Australia and Europe.

As well as playing music, I have a passion for the technical side of things. I studied Sound Engineering in Wales and went on to work in studios all over the world. I am currently in the early stages of building my own recording studio back home in Ireland. As a producer and mixing engineer, I have worked with some fantastic artists, including Luka Bloom, The Fiddle Case and Ultan Conlon.

Interview with Jon O'Connell

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: One project I am particularly proud of is Out Of The Blue by Luka Bloom. This was recorded during the pandemic, with all the challenges that introduced. But we created a beautiful album of instrumental music, that seemed to have a deep effect on those who listened. I engineered, produced and played several instruments on this album.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: At the moment, I am working with an alternative artist called Whitethorn, and preparing a song for release in Ireland by the band The Fiddle Case.

  5. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  6. A: I started playing music when I was 15 (nearly 30 years ago!), gigging in the local pubs in West Clare. When school finished I studied Sound Engineering at the University of Wales, and after that studied jazz music as a bass player at Newpark College in Dublin. During this time I joined the legendary Irish band The Walls, and we went on to have two top 5 albums and tour the world. All the while, I was very interested in Irish folk music and tried to participate in the Clare session scene as much as possible. This led to the band The Fiddle Case and we have recorded 3 albums, collaborated with many amazing artists and toured Europe extensively. One of these artists is Luka Bloom, and with Luka I produced two albums, and travelled all over Ireland and Europe as bass player. Along the way, I became bass player and produced an album with Ultan Conlon. All this eventually led to a project studio at my house in Clare, where I have worked constantly for the past 5 years on a diverse range of music as a producer, musician and mix engineer.

  7. Q: How would you describe your style?

  8. A: My style as a mix engineer is to make every voice in a song sound true

  9. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  10. A: Soren Huss

  11. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  12. A: Folk and acoustic typically, but I am a huge fan of rock, electronica and have worked on lots of such productions

  13. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  14. A: Mixing from the heart

  15. Q: What's your typical work process?

  16. A: My typical process is to

  17. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  18. A: At the moment I am upgrading my studio at home in Ireland. Hence, my current setup is simply me, my laptop, monitors and headphones (and a fantastic view). I love to work, so I have reflected my simple setup in the price.

  19. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  20. A: Beck and Neil Young are constant inspiration. Their songwriting, musicianship and production leave me speechless most of the time.

  21. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  22. A: At the moment, most of my work is mixing. I have moved a little sideways; from performance to production to mixing. I am passionate about getting to the heart of a song in a mix.
