Garrett N. Derhofer is a Mixing Engineer, Producer, Recording Engineer & Musician with 25+ years experience helping artists bring their music to life.
A lifelong musician (piano, drums, bass, guitar, synth, percussion), Garrett brings both a musician’s intuition and an engineer’s precision to every mix.

Interview with Garrett N. Derhofer
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: The new album Show You Love from the band Take Your Shoes Off was a really fun project. They came down to stay with me for a week while we tracked the album. We then mixed it remotely and it's recently been released. I was the Producer/Mixing Engineer on this album.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: A number of new exciting projects! That's the best part of this work.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Either are great! I enjoy tracking with Analog and mixing digital, but it's always project dependent.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: SoundYourBest
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Collaborating with talented artists and helping them bring their vision to life. Every project is unique — that’s what keeps this work exciting.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That mixing is just about plugins and gear. It’s about feel, space, and helping the artist’s intent come through clearly.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What’s your vision for this project? Are there any reference tracks you love? How do you want your listeners to feel when they hear your music?
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Shure SM57, Sennheiser 441, Coles 4038, Distressor, Calrec S2 Console
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I’ve been recording since 1999. After nearly a decade in the corporate world, I built SoundStudio412 from the ground up — combining musical passion with business discipline.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Artist-first. Professional. Collaborative, clear, and supportive — focused on helping each artist achieve their vision with great sonic quality.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Trent Reznor because he's a genius.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Focus on serving the song. Every production choice — from arrangement to mix — should support the emotion and intent of the music.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Rock, Metal, Indie, Alternative, Americana, Acoustic Singer-Songwriter, Rap
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Helping artists SoundYourBest — creating an environment (virtual or physical) where they feel heard, respected, and supported. Technically: achieving depth and clarity in mixes that translate across systems.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring both a musician’s ear and an engineer’s precision. I enjoy adapting to the sound of the artist I'm working with. Having played drums, bass, guitar, piano, and synths for years, I approach every mix with a deep understanding of musical feel, space, and dynamics.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: For remote mixing clients, I provide a clear file prep guide and offer 2–3 revisions. I often schedule a remote session to walk through mix tweaks live. In-studio clients benefit from a relaxed, artist-first workflow that encourages great performances.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: SoundStudio412 is a world-class recording and mixing environment designed to help artists SoundYourBest. The studio combines a beautiful-sounding 48 Channel Calrec S2 analog console and carefully selected outboard gear with modern digital tools, all in an acoustically designed, inspiring, comfortable space. Whether I’m mixing remotely or tracking full productions, the focus is always on creating a workflow that supports the artist’s vision.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Steve Albini, Butch Vig, Andrew Scheps, Sylvia Massy, Rick Rubin — all producers who put the artist first and create an environment where great performances happen naturally.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I produce and mix full-length albums, EPs, and singles for serious artists. Most clients come to me for a clear, dynamic mix that connects emotionally and elevates their music. I also track full bands and Produce solo artists @SoundStudio412.
