Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I was approached to write and produce a song for a Swedish football team. I was given the lyrics and the rest was up to me. Singing in Swedish (not my native language) was a huge challenge but the client was really happy with the final product and told me how much it meant to the small community based around the football club. This is why I love my job.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I'm working on a vocal package for a client in the UK. A fantastic Indie Rock songwriter that I've built a good working relationship with over the last few years.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Not at the moment.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Good question! Analog will always sound better in my opinion, but digital is so much more accessible and is what I've used 90% of the time.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I'm 100% focused on delivering your vision and will make sure that becomes a reality.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: The variety. Whether it's laying down vocals, or writing melodies/lyrics or even producing whole songs. It's something different every day and keeps me on my toes.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Do you sing in a particular accent? I can sing in a range of accents (British or American for example) but my natural singing accent has a Scottish twang which I can make less or more apparent depending on your needs!
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: I'll have to pass on this one!
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: In what style would you like me to sing? Do you have reference tracks/vocalists? How closely would you like me to follow your guide vocal?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Have a good conversation with the provider and be clear with what your expectations of the project are. The more detail the better. But at the same time, if you'd prefer artistic license to be used, that's also welcomed! Communication is key.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Generator, Macbook, guitar, mic, headphones
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: Professionally for 6 years.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Melancholy. I aim to create emotions and for the listener to feel.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Simon Neil - Biffy Clyro. I've always been fascinated how he implements his experience of playing violin into his guitar playing and songwriting. It is so unique.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: The decisions that one makes very early in the songwriting process, contribute a huge deal to the ultimate outcome and quality of the track towards the mixing and mastering stage. Arrangement and instrument/frequency choices are essential!
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Usually alternative rock but I'm very comfortable with pop, rock, indie, folk, soul.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Arranging backing vocals and harmonies
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Organic creativity. I will always bring something fresh to a song.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I almost always focus on the vocal melody first to every detail. Then I will fit the lyrics around that.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have a home studio setup with a treated vocal booth. I record through a Focusrite 2i2, with a high quality M-Audio condensor microphone. All further processing and editing is done in Logic Pro.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Chris Cornell, Max Martin
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I provide impactful top line melodies as well as industry level vocal packages.
