Interview with Bartosz Napieralski - C2Studio

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: Mixing and mastering of Dope D.O.D. latest albums. 3 albums I made with polish rapper Słoń that got golden record award. Latest singles of Cyrko that got diamond and platinum record awards.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Several rock/rap/pop albums

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: Both. Digital for easy recall, fast workflow, unlimited possibilities. Analog for sonic qualities, creativity.

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: A professional mix and mastering that will suit your goals, style and sonic preferences. Good contact and smooth process.

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: Being creative and doing what you love for a living.

  11. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  12. A: "Do you use digital or analog gear?" I use both, but in the end - it's not what matters the most. How you use them, what's your monitoring system, experience, creativity - those are far more important.

  13. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  14. A: That AI mixing tools can replace a mixing engineer. It just can't. Mixing is a very subjective process, there is no "one way only" solution to mix a track. It's about bringing out emotion and being creative to make a song shine. AI can only speed up my work if used correctly :)

  15. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  16. A: What's your aim? How would you like your track to sound? Provide reference tracks. What platform are you going to use for distribution?

  17. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  18. A: Reach out, try to connect with the person you're going to hire. Any mixing engineer can mix a track in 10 different ways achieving different sonic qualities that suit specific clients. Audio examples are not the most important thing - it's more about connecting to understand the vibe of the song and direction you'd like your track to go.

  19. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  20. A: A Mac, my speaker system and Slate VSX heaphones, UAD-2 Apollo interface

  21. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  22. A: Almost 15 years. Started as a stage hand and live sound engineer and gravitated towards working in a recording studio. Now I own a recording studio in Poland. Got great reviews and a lot of awards for my work.

  23. Q: How would you describe your style?

  24. A: Achieving great clarity, separation and width in a mix combined with high loudness without sacrificing quality and feeling of natural dynamics.

  25. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  26. A: Dua Lipa, RÜFÜS DU SOL, Rudimental, Bruno Mars - love the way their songs sound, love the arrangement, would like to get a shot of working with an artist on that level

  27. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  28. A: Be creative. Frequently reference to other songs. Take breaks in work. Be open-minded.

  29. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  30. A: Basically almost all genres - I've done several classical albums (solo instrumentalists, opera singers), a lot of jazz live recordings, dozens of rock bands, dozens of rap albums with top polish artists, some EDM and modern pop tracks, some afro-trap albums with clients from Somalia and Nigeria. Basically - I'm not afraid to mix or master any genre as long as you can give me a reference track I can base my work on :)

  31. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  32. A: Achieving great clarity, separation and width in a mix combined with high loudness without sacrificing quality and feeling of natural dynamics.

  33. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  34. A: Pro-quality sound. Sense of dynamics. Cool elements that draw listeners attention.

  35. Q: What's your typical work process?

  36. A: Editing -> Tuning -> "Static" mix -> Automation and special FX -> Mastering. Sending to client for notes, than doing revisions and printing all alternative versions of the mix / stems.

  37. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
