Multi-Man Mixing & Mastering on SoundBetter

20 years of experience and a passion for music production, engineering, and analog gear. If mixing songs was like an improv cooking show my special guests would be Walter White and Rick Sanchez. I'm going to do c o m p l e x things to these tracks.. Unconventional things.. Sonically pleasing things.. Enjoyable things!

From the shadows of the audio production world, I re-emerge onto this website to lend my skills, tools, and ears to the talented few or many who need a fresh perspective.

We can go really simple such as: processing songs through analog summing and fun outboard equipment on the 2buss with tape saturation, filters, SSL and Neve style comps, and a bit of eq and air.

Standard: I can mix a song from stems or individual tracks.

Complex: If you don't love your song as it stands, I can step in as producer and breathe some magic into the process with guitar, bass, keyboard, percussion, and anything else that makes a noise.

As an artist myself, I took a hiatus from music and production to discover other pieces of myself and life. What I discovered is that musical ability is a gift that should never be taken for granted.. and if you are a wizard of studio tools, you should help the hobbits get to Mordor one track at a time.

So, please excuse my pop culture references and whimsical writing. Here is a list of music I love, though I am very open minded to all styles of creativity.

Air, Bjork, Weezer, Billie Eilish, Modest Mouse, Flaming Lips, The Strokes, North Americans, Muse, The Beatles, Queen, The Distillers, Jeff Buckley, Radiohead, Yung Lean, Oliver Tree, Frank Zappa, The White Stripes, QOTSA, Nirvana, Foo Fighters, and more!

I can honestly say I've never worked with a more talented musician or polished producer and engineer in my life. Ian (the Multi-Man) is beyond gifted and insanely dynamic in his offerings - check out my full length album, AWAKE, for the proof. He tracked most of it, performed on it, edited, produced, mixed, and mastered that beast over 10 years ago (it released June 2014!) and I STILL get compliments on how smooth it is. He is brilliant. This is not an exaggeration - his quality of work is rare. I truly believe Ian is a genius and worth working with if you get the opportunity.

Ian is truly the Multi Man. He is not only a multi-instrumentalist, but an insane crative with production skills to match. He will help you bring your vision to life. Also, a joy to be around with a ridiculous sense of humor. Something you might appreciate when cooped up in a studio for long hours. Make magic happen with the one and only Multi Man 🤟🏼

Ian is an extremely talented multi-instrumentalist, singer, sound engineer, and producer with a great ear. Not only did he record, mix, and master two EPs and a few singles for us; he also had a pivotal role in the production of our music. He brought creative “outside the box” ideas to every session to enhance the sonic quality and craftsmanship of every song. On top of that, we always had fun working together. We would recommend him to anyone looking to bring their music to the next level.

Interview with Multi-Man Mixing & Mastering

  1. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  2. A: Both, there's an upside to using the best of both worlds together.

  3. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  4. A: The endless search for, and acquirement of GEAR. The spaceship-like qualities of a recording studio and the pride one has owning their own "spaceship" ..and the ability to put a smile on someone's face when they hear their song sounding AMAZING.

  5. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  6. A: Have a good idea of what you want, but make sure your source material is in line with your goals.

  7. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  8. A: A good condenser mic, a good channel strip, a tape machine, a baritone guitar, and a drum set.

  9. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  10. A: Don't overanalyze and over-listen.

  11. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  12. A: There's usually a guitar involved.

  13. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  14. A: Challenging the status quo.

  15. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  16. A: Energy. It's all about energy.

  17. Q: What's your typical work process?

  18. A: Inspect: find weaknesses, find strengths. Catch a vibe and dive into it. Compare with other amazing mixes and rework it.

  19. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  20. A: A focus on making the monitoring room sound neutral. Not dead. Not ambient. Accurate listening should be achievable at a variety of volumes. Key pieces of analog equipment have been selected for 2buss treatment. A workflow to process audio efficiently and repeatably is important. The room is full of abstract artwork and pro audio toys. I am Hattori Hanzo, and if I fail you, I will perform seppuku.

  21. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  22. A: I am inspired by amazing artists who are not necessarily technically talented at their instruments, but who can communicate the many facets of the human experience from the highest to lowest points and everything in between. I believe the music is the highest form of self expression, and much like the great classical composers, I make sure that the call and response interplay between instruments is telling a story, sonically, to meet with the artistic integrity of the song.

  23. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  24. A: From 2008-2018 I provided full service production, engineering, mixing, and mastering to a variety of clients as a studio owner. Now, as a freelance engineer, I am focusing on mixing and mastering.
