Endorse TLEWInterview with TLEW
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My imagination is my strongest skill. Imagining how good a track can sound enables me to use my experience to work towards attaining the imagined sound.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring an extreme attention to detail and a desire to bring the product to its full potential.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Every track has different demands. Most regularly, I start with a less is more approach. Gain stage, remove clashing, and create space to begin with. Then I will typically focus on drums to get them to the level of punch and movement that the track calls for as a baseline for the rest to build around. From there I will work on instruments and bass, then vocals last. After that, I will take a break and come back with fresh ears to make edits. I always take at least 2 breaks and enjoy a good sleep in between editing sessions to truly refresh my ears and perspective.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have a private studio space within my apartment with KRK Rokit G5 studio monitors, a shure sm7b microphone, a Roland 88-key weighted keyboard, two synthesizers, and an Ibanez bass.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Stevie Wonder's songwriting, Steely Dan's Mixes, Daft Punk's Drums, Mac Miller's Evolution, Kendrick Lamar's flow, James Blake's voice, Pink Floyd's creativity.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I typically work from start to finish on original songs with my clients. However, on Soundbetter, I am strictly engaging in mixing to further build my portfolio and try some new experiences.
