I am a producer, engineer, and drummer based out of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. My work has helped artists enjoy features on networks such as MTV and Oxygen, as well as achieve FM and XM radio exposure, reaching a worldwide audience of millions.

As a Producer, Recording Engineer, and Mix Engineer I have had the fortune of making music with some of my favourite artists both locally and around the world. As a multi-instrumentalist, singer, and writer, I am able to communicate and envision every element of the production, as well as the big picture with you.

When I am not Producing or Engineering, I am teaching Production and Engineering at Durham College in Ontario, Canada. Communicating and going over the process is one of my favourite things.

As a drummer, I am a member of the international rock band Bolus. When not playing with Bolus, I love playing on other people's projects. It's always an interesting and fun experience to make someone else's vision come to life. My background as a trained Engineer and Producer allow me to get very specific, and great sounding drum sounds.

My previous experience with mastering Engineers did not meet my expectations, so thank goodness I found Mat on soundbetter.com ... one project now completed together, and I'm already getting the response time, level of professionalism, and mastering quality for which I had hoped. Looking forward to future projects with Mat!

Keselman has some of the hardest-working freelance chops I know. From mixing, recording engineering, mastering to performing as a session drummer, he is consistently focused on aural clarity, precise editing, realistic imaging and natural dynamics. With Mat, a good source is essential - it's never enough to "fix it in the mix."

Interview with Mat Keselman

What's your 'promise' to your clients?
I've got two: 1) I will give you world-class results. 2) I am not happy until you are happy.
What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
That there are magic devices that can fix bad performances at the touch of a button. Engineers can help to an extent, but it's almost all done by hand, and they can only do a little bit to push an already great performance.
What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
Communicate what you want and need. If you are unsure of what you want and need, just let me know and I will help you figure it out.
How would you describe your style?
I serve the song before I serve my style. So I can't really say "big punchy drums" because that isn't always true. My style is making things feel right.
Which artist would you like to work with and why?
Present or past? Imogen Heap, Pure Reason Revolution, The Beatles, Porcupine Tree, Michael Jackson, Justin Timberlake, Opeth, Tool. I love what these artists do / did and think I can help push things even further in those directions.
Can you share one music production tip?
The ear and brain are very subjective. Make sure to rely on your first instincts and feelings. If something didn't sound right at first but on a 3rd listen it seems fine, it's probably not fine.
What type of music do you usually work on?
Rock, pop, electronic, world, hip hop. Most contemporary genres.
What do you bring to a song?
In addition to Engineering and Production, I am also a multi-instrumentalist, singer, writer, lyricist, and arranger. These skills help me see the song and mix from a different, more personal perspective and deliver unique results.
Tell us about your studio setup.
For mixes and masters I usually work out of my own facility in Toronto. Universal Audio and Focusrite pre amps and I/O with Dynaudio and Auratone monitors. I work on a Mac running Pro Tools 11 with UAD, McDSP, Slate Digital, Waves, and Brainworx plugins to name a few. A large selection of virtual instruments are also available in-house. The studio is also equipped with Gibson guitars and a Yamaha DTX 950 electric drum kit for drum programming and performing. Acoustic drum recordings are done at a larger facility depending on the client's needs.
What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
Steven Wilson, Imogen Heap, Michael Brauer, Dave Pensado, Timbaland, The Mars Volta, Andy Wallace, Daft Punk, this could be a very long list.
Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
I most commonly mix, produce, and play / record / program drums for both local and remote clients.
