Interview with Dorothy K

Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I'm currently working with upcoming R&B/Pop Singer Brittney Leigh. She has an old school Aaliyah vibe with a little bit of new school Kehlani attitude. Its a really fun project that I have been producing and songwriting on.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Yes! my girl Lex Lu is killing it! Also my guy Riley Urick.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Analog. The sound and quality of sound is unmatched. I love a warm wet sound and analog is the king of that.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I like to know how serious my clients are. I provide top notch work regardless of my their intentions but I do like to know what possibilities the future holds for all of my clients.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: my advice would be to just be honest with what you are looking for. I know people are sensitive about their art and it is my job to make everyone feel comfortable and represented in the way they like.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I call my style Urban Vibe. Urban,,could be played in the club or loud in the car, but at the same time a vibe with meaning and feeling.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would love to work with Rihanna. The way she executes GREAT songs give me chills and it would be an honor to have her sing something I wrote. We have similar vocal tones as well and I think she could really bring out what I could come up with.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Simple is Gold and when in doubt, Slow it down.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I usually work on Pop and Urban style music.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Top-lining and Vocal Producing in all genres is my strongest skill.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring uniqueness and meaning to songs. I like bringing out the real, the emotion and the vibe of a song.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: My work process is usually dialed in and focused. Once I start I can't stop until its completed sort of thing. I love collaborating as well. I ask for input and suggestions a lot because I truly believe the teamwork makes the dream work.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have an m-audio keystation keyboard that I love I use Propellerhead Software's REASON, Ableton and Pro Tools I record vocals on a AKG c314 condenser mic
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: My inspiration list is songs and wide. I love old school pop heavy hitters like The Beatles ABBA Stevie Wonder, the Jackson 5. New School artist who inspire me are Meek Mill, Anderson Paak, Brandy, The-Dream, T-Pain, TInashe, Rihanna, Ariana Grande and Missy Elliot

A: I typically vocal produce, top line and song-write for my clients.
