Interview with SONORAM
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: Definitely the music for Oscar winning director Luca Guadagnino. We helped create and record the music for both an HBO series (We Are Who We Are) and a movie (Salvatore) and just loved the process. We were lucky enough to record a 60 piece orchestra with some players of the London Philharmonic Orchestra and was just a wonderful experience.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: A fantastic project for BMG in collaboration with a close friend, Joe Cleere, an incredible singer and writer.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Not yet, we're quite new here.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both! first for sound quality, second for convenience and creativity.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: This is not just a job, it's a passion, and we will deliver you our best work.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: We love the whole process, entering someone's vision, developing it together, being inspired by the images, creating something unique.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: How long will this take and how much will it cost? Answer: it depends.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That library music will sound just as good: it won't, sorry. Creating music TO image, or developing the images in conjunction with something tailor made, will always lead to a superior result.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Timeline, expectations, vision, specific requirements, references... lots of (constructive) questions!
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Let's talk about your project. Tell us your vision and bring us into your world, or let's develop it together! Then let's get started.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: ahahah.... oh well, probably our '73 Strat, a Macbook with all our favourite plugins, an interface, a Manley Tube mic and our beloved APS speakers.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: Over 6 years now, and we've been in the music business for over 15, with 100s of millions of streams and several gold records behind us.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: We love working on scores and tracks that require a fusion of orchestral and electronic elements, but also on songs that require a singer and lyrics: we regularly collaborate with some incredibly talented singers.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: The two composers we mentioned early would represent a dream partnership. Ludwig Göransson's work on the Oppenheimer OST, which he talks about in his interview on Mix With The Masters, is just incredible. The absolute simplicity of Can you hear the music, from those simple 6 notes, becoming this crazy universe of subatomic particles through over 20 tempo changes... incredible. And Hans Zimmer, of course. So much incredible work! and he seems like a fantastic human being too.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Find one clear idea based on feeling and intuition, rather than intellect, and develop your piece around that.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: We love working on projects ranging from simple sound design and foley to full orchestral scores, and anything in between: combining electronic music and orchestral is always fun.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Probably the combination of our different backgrounds: Rocco can cover anything orchestra related, from scoring to arranging, while Lorenzo is an expert at anything Sound Design, Production and Mixing / Mastering. The combination of the different backgrounds always brings something exciting to the table.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: We can bring writing, arrangement, production, scoring, mixing, mastering. We just want to understand what the client needs and provide the best possible service, it is our mission and our passion.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: We usually love to talk to the director or client about their vision, understand the sensibility behind the project and explore all the available material. We'll then start working on the images, if these are already available, otherwise we'll prepare our first ideas to share with the client, often using references.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: We work in various spaces, mostly in or around Tileyard Studios (King's Cross, London). We have our music studios, but can also access larger rooms like Kings Place's Hall 1 for recording orchestras: https://kingsplaceevents.co.uk/spaces/hall-one/
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Definitely Ludwig Göransson and Hans Zimmer are some of our favourites. Ludwig's wotk on Oppenheimer, recently, was just incredible.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: We often work on Soundtracks for Movies and TV Series, as well as advertising. We love creating music for image, for all kinds of purposes!
