Interview with Aliz Smith
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I was once asked to record backing vocals on a track for a man who spoke no english. He needed lyrics sung in Spanish which isn't my native language. Despite the language barrier, I was able to assist him in creating the sound he was looking for and he was very happy with the outcome. I'm proud of this because we worked together, and communicated in such a way that it didn't matter that he didn't speak English nor that I don't speak Spanish. We got it done which, to me, is a testament to the power of good music and talented artists working together harmoniously.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital for some projects, Analog for others. Lo-fi tracks are becoming popular again in the electronic and house genres, lots of chillout tunes. I prefer digital for most things but I prefer analog for lo-fi mellow meats.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I LOVE networking and getting to know other artists. I love when a client is happier than they thought they'd be upon receiving their final tracks.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: The most COMMON asked question is: CAN YOU DO THIS? The most COMMON answer is: YES I CAN!
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: The biggest misconception is that anyone can do this sort of work. I'm a REAL singer, not someone who did well in my High School talent show (although, I DID do well there, too). I'm someone with a real studio, a real team of musicians behind me, and I take my craft seriously. This not a hobby. This is how I sustain a living. This is how I pay my mortgage. Another misconception is that as an artist, I'm looking for fame or notoriety. I know for a fact....if I wanted to be a mainstream artist, I could. But the truth of the matter is I simply do not possess the ego or the desire to want to be heard or seen by millions of people. I'm not interested in millions of people. I'm not looking for fame or recognition. I'm just looking to sing on your track and a little song credit. I'm looking for REAL ARTISTS AND MUSICIANS who want to hire a talented vocalist, without overpaying. That's it. Consider me a singers' singer or a musicians' musician. I am the artist behind the scenes who works for the "Artist" out on stage. I will do everything in my power to promote my clients and their work.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I typically ask for a back story of the track which allows me to understand client needs better and how to add to their creative process followed by what files and supporting documents are available. I then listen to the track and determine if I can assist with the track and if so, what I can do. I then get to work. I keep in CONSTANT communication with my clients; I ask a lot of questions, send files and seek approval before moving on to the next steps. I also encourage clients to ask questions to ensure we understand each other and the project runs as smoothly as possible.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Oh, wow. How much time ya got? I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to work with Thundercat OR Ty $sign OR Robert Glasper OR Taylor McFerrin OR Wild Nothing OR Bibio. What do they all have in common? 1. They're all MUSICIANS! I love working with REAL musicians with unique artist approaches to modern sound. 2. They are incredible writers 3. I know for a fact I could learn something different from each and everyone one of the artists in my list and I am always trying to grow, learn, and be a better artist. The better I am as a session artist, the better your songs will be.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: -I promise you will love my work -I promise a seamless process from start to finish -I promise two FREE revisions on every order -I promise to acknowledge and respect your creative vision -I promise to treat your projects like gold -I promise to tell you if something isn't within my scope of abilities -I promise you will have made a friend after working with me
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Currently I'm working on two singles for an independent artist (UK) and an EDM EP with a phenomenal producer.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: I'm new here! As soon as I find some other dope artists, I'll definitely share!
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: I would tell anyone looking to hire me to gather their files, arrangements, and instructions and to send them over. I would encourage new customers to ask questions. Get your concerns out on front street and allow me to explain the process and why you'll be 100% satisfied with my work. My customers receive: Professionally recorded tracks Professional mixing/mastering File format of your choice Multiple vocal stems Commercial rights usage TWO revisions per order Professionally mastered tracks Optional: Original Instrumental Original lyrics Electric Guitar, acoustic, or bas guitar Piano Organ Percussion Up to 5 voices (two male, three female various vocal ranges)
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: 1. Mic 2. Macbook 3. Guitar 4. My puppies 5. My studio (does that count as a "piece" of gear?)
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Dub lead vocals to create a full, cleaner sound. =)
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: EDM, RnB, I do a lot of chorus and hook tracks on rap songs and electronica.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My strongest skill is likely communication. Im a "people" person and I communicate fairly well. I don't have too many issues when completing an order because I ensure I understand my buyers and their projects before even stepping into the studio. I am also very good with attention to detail and a bit of a perfectionist. I'm slightly obsessed with perfect pitch, staying in key, and bringing out the best in each track.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: 1. Consult with client, verify I'm a match for your project 2. Review instructions, music file and arrangement 3. Clarify requirements and agreement with client 4. Record backing vocals and harmony tracks 5. Record lead over BV's 6. Record any ad-lib/effects as requested by client 7. Send off to studio for professional mixing 8. Return to client for approval.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Protools, LogicPro X, Rhode NA-1 condenser mic
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: My work generally includes backing vocals for all genres, demos and lead vocals for EDM, House, Electronica, and R&B projects. Usually, clients request backing vocals, harmony, and ad-libs. I create vocal references and demos and have been featured on quite a few projects with EDM producers. I also produce full instrumental tracks for those looking for an original piece of music.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I've been doing this for about 5 years professionally. Previously I worked as an nanny throughout college. Then I did a stint in a corporate position before offering remote session vocals. Now, I work FT as a session singer via multiple platforms.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style is fun, sexy, and powerful. I have a great vocal control which can be heard in the projects I've worked on. I try to bring my personality to each track and I'm just a fun loving Jersey girl who loves to sing!
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I breathe life into every project. Each song I complete has a flawless sound and is warm and inviting with an added element of humility as to not overshadow the producers and musicians I work with. My voice is versatile and flexible. I can play it up or down, but my main focus is to use my voice to work harmoniously with your creative vision.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Thundercat, Everything Everything, Little Dragon, Toro y Moi, Arrested Development, Lalah Hathaway (and her father, of course, duh!), Bibio, Solange.
