Interview with Matías Gatti

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: I'm composing and producing my own music.

  3. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  4. A: Andrés Mayo and Tweety González. Besides being familiar with their work, I took training courses with them, and they are great professionals.

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: I like analog; it has its magic. But if I had to choose just one, I would go with digital. Nowadays, it sounds excellent and is very practical and fast. I can achieve the same results.

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: I treat each project as if it were truly mine. I have no other way of doing it. I will always deliver my best.

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: I love being part of the musical creation. There's also a sense of satisfaction in creatively overcoming obstacles.

  11. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  12. A: How much does such a service cost? It costs x amount. But if it's within my capabilities and my work exceeds the budget, we can find a way to make it work for both parties.

  13. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  14. A: Not delegating tasks enough, working on it :)

  15. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  16. A: Do you have any material to show me? How do you think I can assist you?

  17. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  18. A: Reach out to the provider; they will likely be happy to talk to you. Express your intentions and needs. Everything should go well. We're making music!

  19. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  20. A: My PC, interface, and monitors. A Midi controller and a guitar.

  21. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  22. A: Around 2005, I started as a professional musician (although I played before that), and during the same period, I began training in audio engineering. In fact, my first certification is from that year by the Audio Engineering Society. After that, I furthered my education in audio recording and post-production. I also hold a degree as a guitarist and a bachelor's in music.

  23. Q: How would you describe your style?

  24. A: I seek emotion in music. Extremely detail-oriented technically and in love with music.

  25. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  26. A: Today, I would like to work more with "urban" or electronic artists like Ca7riel or Wos. They seem very genuine to me. But who knows, maybe I'll have to update this question soon.

  27. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  28. A: If the budget allows, divide tasks among different specialists. Hire musicians who contribute to the ideas. If you have a good song recorded with quality and a good performance, 90% of the job is done.

  29. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  30. A: A lot of Argentine and Latin American folk, as well as rock and pop.

  31. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  32. A: Listening!

  33. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  34. A: I truly feel that my strong background as a musician gives me an enriching perspective. Even though I'm a nerd when it comes to the technical aspects, I never forget about the music. This also makes me highly respectful of others' creations, and I strive to provide everything each song needs.

  35. Q: What's your typical work process?

  36. A: In terms of mixing and mastering, it depends a lot on the musical genre, but I always aim for these processes to enhance the emotion that the music evokes. In production, one approach I like is to record the song with just vocals and guitar (or some accompanying instrument) to use as a foundation and then build upon it.

  37. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  38. A: I have a studio where I do a significant portion of my work. I use my computer running Pro Tools and Ableton (my favorite DAWs), and many plugins I've acquired over time. Among my favorites are the UAD plugins. My interface is a UAD Apollo x4. I use Yamaha HS8 monitors and Icon motorized faders. If the music calls for analog hardware, I usually book extra sessions in studios. Although I must admit, I'm more of a digital boy. For production, I typically use my Arturia 61 keyboard, Fender Stratocaster guitar, a bombshell classical guitar from a luthier, a Fender Jazz Bass, and various other instruments, pedals, and percussions. Regarding microphones, I usually go for a pair of AKG c214 and a Neumann U87 replica.

  39. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  40. A: Oh, so many! I would say I'm partly inspired by Argentine folk music. There's something very valuable there even if it's not so mainstream. Argentine classic rock also inspires me, like Charly García, Spinetta, Fito Paez. On a more global level, I love the breadth of work from producers like Rick Rubin and musicians ranging from Radiohead to Dua Lipa.

  41. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  42. A: I usually mix singles, EPs, or albums, and I also handle the mastering. In many cases, I also participate as a music producer. Additionally, as I have been a musician and guitarist for many years, I also work as a session musician.
