Interview with Ethan Twiddy

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I worked on a record with a band called Hippie Love Party in 2023 that I was particularly proud of because of the range that album allowed me. Through its whole runtime you get a strong Emo foundation with elements of Mathrock, Metalcore, Dance, Electronic, and even some Reggae!

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: At the moment I am working on writing and recording material with my personal band for our second album in between recording and mixing projects for clients.

  5. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  6. A: Both! There is no need to pick one or the other when we live in a world without compromise. There are plenty of reasons to reach for both analog or digital applications while mixing! The warmth and saturation of analog can bring your track to life while the precision and reliability of digital can control it to give you the best of both worlds.

  7. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  8. A: My promise to my clients is this: I will deliver your track at an industry standard level and take your input to make it your own personal sound.

  9. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  10. A: My favorite part of my job is the satisfaction I get when creating something that did not exist before, or bettering something in a way that stays true to the source material through Mixing and Mastering

  11. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  12. A: I commonly ask what the purpose of a good mix and master is and my answer is always the same. A good mix and master will allow its listeners to clearly understand and enjoy the song. It is not meant to outshine the performance, it is meant to enhance it.

  13. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  14. A: The biggest misconception about mixing and mastering is that you just slap some processing on and it will make it better. Mixing a track to achieve the full bodied sound that modern music demands, you need to have a trained ear to be able to hear what frequencies need to be boosted or cut on which tracks and what elements are sitting well or not in the mix.

  15. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  16. A: When clients are thinking about working with me, I like to ask them what their vision is for the project. This allows me to understand their end goal and how I can help them achieve that.

  17. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  18. A: The best advice I could give to customers looking to hire a provider like me is to have a clear Image of what you want your track to sound like so that it is easy to communicate it to your engineer.

  19. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  20. A: If I were on a desert island and could only bring 5 pieces of gear, I would bring my computer of course because of how versatile it is in this modern age of recording, followed by a Neumann U-47 Mic, Neve 1073 Preamp/EQ, an 1176 Compressor, and an LA2A Compressor for a great vocal chain!

  21. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  22. A: I started Recording, Mixing, & Mastering out of necessity when I was writing my own music in highschool, but quickly fell in love with the art and the creative possibilities it provided. From there I asked every person I knew who made music if I could Record and Mix for them so that I could learn more and get better at it. After a while I decided to take a leap of faith and started interning at a professional studio which led to a job as a Recording Engineer. Fast forward to now I am making records with friends and strangers alike!

  23. Q: How would you describe your style?

  24. A: I would describe my style as raw & larger than life, with a focused & clean modern touch.

  25. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  26. A: An artist I would love to work with is a band called The World Is A Beautiful Place & I Am No Longer Afraid To Die. I absolutely adore their music and love the creative textures they stack with acoustic and electronic elements. It makes for a wonderful listening experience and I would Love to be able to work with them on something!

  27. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  28. A: The best Music Production tip anyone can understand is to question what your track needs. If you don't know what your track needs, then you cannot properly asses it!

  29. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  30. A: Typically I work on a lot of Alternative Rock music ranging from Indie to Emo & Mathrock but I have worked on my fair share of Pop and Rap projects as well.

  31. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  32. A: My strongest skill is mixing. I have been doing it ever since I learned what it was and have been constantly bettering my skills in it.

  33. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  34. A: When I am tasked with working on a track either to Edit, Tune, Record, Mix, or Master, I treat it as if it was the first track I have ever worked on. By that I mean I dig deep into it and find out what makes this track special? What can I do to emphasize that? How can I make this better? And that hunger to learn allows me to bring any song to the next level.

  35. Q: What's your typical work process?

  36. A: My typical work process, after asking the client their vision for the track, is to load all of my audio into the DAW, listen through one time without adjusting anything while taking notes and getting a feel for the vibe of the song. Then once I have a proper understanding of the song, I start adjusting faders and pots to get my levels and panning set, followed by my basic processing like EQ and Compression (this is usually the time that I would start making any edits to timing or tuning & cutting unneeded audio as well). Once I have a nice raw mix I start to add my effects in to make it larger than life, these usually consist of Parallel Compression, Reverb, Ping Pong & Slap Tape Delay, Saturation, etc. After I have my mix dialed in I start to shape the whole track tonally and dynamically with mastering. Then I send it off to the client to see if they have any notes to start making revisions!

  37. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  38. A: My studio space is quite cozy, I have 2 screens to allow me a timeline and mixer view at once and monitor my mixes on Adam Audio Monitors. I have my space acoustically treated and my monitors tuned to my room to be sure that I am hearing the most accurate signal possible when making mixing decisions.

  39. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  40. A: Some of my biggest inspirations are Andrew Scheps & Warren Huart because of their deep understanding of audio & mixing and the ability to keep things simple as to not overcomplicate things. They are also wonderful sources of information!

  41. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  42. A: The type of work I most commonly do for clients is Mixing and Mastering along with Audio Editing, Timing, and Tuning.
