I contacted Maria to ask if she would consider mixing and mastering an instrumental piece I'd recently composed.

The communication throughout the process was exceptionally good and the results exceeded my most optimistic hopes.

Maria went beyond the original brief to suggest changes to the arrangement and dynamics of the piece and this certainly added great value.

Maria is talented and patient and clearly takes great pride in her work.

I will be working with Maria again soon!

Interview with Maria

  1. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  2. A: I would like to work with Maro. Because her music brings me a lot of ideas already I want to try.

  3. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  4. A: One of the most valuable music production tips I can share is learning when to stop. Knowing when a song is complete and resisting the urge to overwork it is key to maintaining its essence and emotional impact. Sometimes less is more.

  5. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  6. A: Songwriter, Folk, Indie, Pop, Acoustic Music, Balkan Music, Klezmer Music,

  7. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  8. A: My strongest skill is understanding what the artist wants and bringing it to life. I focus on deeply connecting with their vision and using my experience to translate it into a sound that feels authentic and true to their ideas.

  9. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  10. A: What I bring to a song is the unique universe I hear within it and from the artist. I focus on understanding the emotions, story, and essence of the music, and then work to bring those elements to life in a way that feels authentic and true to the artist’s vision.

  11. Q: What's your typical work process?

  12. A: My typical work process starts with an initial meeting with the artist to understand their vision, needs, and creative direction. This helps me identify how I can best support their artistic process. I then listen to the demos they have and, whenever possible, I like to play the songs myself to fully grasp their essence and feel the emotions they convey. If I have a clear idea, I’ll create a demo to capture it. In some cases, the ideas are ready to go straight to the studio—for example, a string quartet arrangement. In those instances, I write the arrangements in MIDI before recording with musicians. Depending on the project, we might record in my home studio or, if needed, in larger studios with more advanced equipment. After recording, the next step is editing. For some projects, I’m the sole musician and play all the instruments myself. Once the editing is done, I move on to post-production, bringing the ideas I’ve had throughout the process to life and fine-tuning the songs. During this stage, I also start creating a preliminary mix. If I’m mixing the project, the next phase is the full mix, which I prepare for mastering. For singles, I sometimes handle the mastering myself to deliver a complete final product.

  13. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  14. A: Equipment: Principal DAW: Protools -Alternative DAW: Logic, Ableton Live -Monitors: Dynaudio BM6A MKII -Audio Interface and converted: Universal Audio Apollo x8p Heritage Edition + Scarlett 18i20 [3rd Gen] -MT8016 Dual Channel Microphone Pre Amplifier -Plugins (COMPLETE BUNDLE) Sound toys, UAD DSP, UAD SPARK, MCDSP, Waves, Oek Sound, Fabfilter, Izotope. -Libraries: Output library, Wastwest Sound, Spitfire, and much more.

  15. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  16. A: I’m a big fan of all the productions by Lhasa de Sela, but her album Lhasa stands out as truly fantastic. I also love Maro’s album It Is OK—the production on it is amazing. Another favorite is Chaos and Creation in the Backyard by Paul McCartney, which he produced himself. Beck’s Sea Change is another incredible production that I admire, as well as Folklore II by Lucía Fumero. And honestly, the list could go on!

  17. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  18. A: What I do most is music production. I’m usually hired to produce albums from the ground up, taking projects from the very first idea to the final result. My process often involves helping with the structure and arrangements of the songs, recording (sometimes in professional studios, other times in my home studio), and then moving on to editing and post-production. I also usually handle the mixing for the productions I work on, ensuring everything comes together seamlessly.
