Interview with Brad Thomas Ackley
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: Arranging music for the film Asterix et Obelix L'empire du Millieu. Huge 75 million dollar budget film and tons of pressure. I worked with -M- on taking his melodies and arranging them throughout the film using traditional Chinese and Celtic instruments along with traditional Orchestra. Everything was re-recorded live with an orchestra from my virtual mockups.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: A track for Angelique Kidjo for an upcoming documentary film.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Joe Ayoub! Amazing bassist!
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both! Embrace the future without forgetting the past!
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I will deliver, and fast!
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: When the energy aligns and you love listening back to your new creation! Be proud!
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: Can you....? Yes I can!
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: None, I try to be very clear and deliberate!
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What is your goal for this song/project? Who is the audience/what is the release for? What is your timeline?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Let's talk first and find common ground! Let's share a vision. We are all different but if we speak the same language, then hitting a goal that you are happy with will be easier!
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: a speedboat full of gas...get me out of there and back to my hundreds of pieces of gear. I use all of it but nothing is precious!
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: 20+ years! Went to Berklee from 1998-2002 MP&E then LA. Moved to Paris in 2011, now back in the USA! I started in rock and electronic bands and worked in studios. My first big project was asst engineer on The Matrix Reloaded! In Paris I worked with -M- for the last 10 years on everything from production, mixing, composition, live show, MD. In parallel I have scored feature films, a TV Series, hundreds of ads, and arranged the music of the latest Asterix and Obelix film L'Empire du Millieu.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Energy from the heart. Direct and soulful.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Metallica, Taylor Swift, Paul McCartney, SebastiAn, Nothing But Thieves, Grandson, Lewis Capaldi, Teddy Swims, Queen
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Know the point of your song. Is it a story? Is it a dance track? Is it a headbanger? It should be obvious!
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I do a ton of audio visual projects that are all different styles. I know how to tell a story with music from a quick 15s advertisement to a full film score.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Getting the song to the finish line! So many great ideas are abandoned. Let me help you get it done and be GREAT!
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: A complete thought with style and vibe. I can be as perfect or imperfect as you need! I can tune or quantize but vibe, style and soul is king. I focus a lot on rhythms and harmony in a song and every track I add has to bring something to the song. I can arrange a full orchestra or make a song work with only one great guitar part. Perspective is key!
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Keep it simple, get the right energy and then fill it out from there. Sometimes just a great bassline can change the whole energy of the song!
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I work mainly in Ableton live and have a full 5.1 surround setup. Tons of plugins and pedals. Extensive sample library and virtaul orchestration libriaries. 30+guitars plus specialty instruments Upright bass, cello, mandolin, ukelele, lap steel, pedal steel, Rhodes, Steinway k52 Upright piano, live drumkit with Zildjian, Paiste and Sabian cymbals, analog synths, Dx7, and I specialize in Talkbox on guitar and Keys.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Anyone who breaks the mold. I love new ideas and forward thinking.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Full service. I adapt to your needs! I can add one track or fill out the whole production with programming, synths, strings, drums, and fx.
