Kester Hrubesch on SoundBetter

Hello! I'm Kester, music producer and sound designer from Hamburg, Germany. I love making all sorts of music, however, I specialise in Post-Production and Sound Design.

In the past I've been working with numerous Indie-Artists and Pop/Rock Bands to add a unique sound to their songs. Mainly I work in genres like Pop Rock, Pop Punk, Post-Hardcore and Metalcore; however I also wrote and produced in Pop as well as Hip Hop.

I work in both a treated home-studio as well as a professionally-treated recording-studio in Hamburg, Germany.
I'm working with both analog and digital synths/equipment.

Communication is key; during the time I'm working with a client I stay in close contact so I can deliver the exact sounds the client needs.

Interview with Kester Hrubesch

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: I'm producing a song for an Indie artist and a Hip Hop EP.

  3. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  4. A: Analog! You can do so much with digital, but the feeling you get from analog is the best!

  5. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  6. A: At all times I will give my best.

  7. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  8. A: I like it when clients have a vision in mind but still give me creative freedom. That creative freedom let's me sink in to my world.

  9. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  10. A: If I can deliver/redo specific sounds.

  11. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  12. A: A lot of my work is sound design for existing songs, however I also produce full songs.

  13. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  14. A: First, it's about connecting and fully understanding my client. So you will hear questions about your previous songs, previous experiences and references.

  15. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  16. A: The vibe between client and producer must be ride. The producer must deliver the right sounds, but the whole process must be enjoyable and fun as well.

  17. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  18. A: My Hydrasynth, Epiphone Les Paul, my incredibly powerful Mac Studio, Rode NT1-A and probably another guitar of mine (you can never have enough guitars)

  19. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  20. A: I started playing guitar when I was 12, at some point I started recording and producing.

  21. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  22. A: Bring me the Horizon, Architects, Olivia Rodrigo. There are just too many to list.

  23. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  24. A: Experiment as much as possible. I think every musician once did something random/not on purpose and it ended up sounding great!

  25. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  26. A: At the moment I'm having lots of fun with Post-Hardcore, however I've worked a lot on Rock and Pop before.

  27. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  28. A: I would say that I'm always searching for sounds that "have not been invented yet" so that I can bring something unique in every production. I do that by using my analog synths paired with numerous effects for example.

  29. Q: What's your typical work process?

  30. A: First I'm chatting with my client about their past work and check out references. Once I fully understand what my clients wants/needs I start to collect ideas and stay in touch with the client during the whole process until the job is finished.

  31. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  32. A: Bring me the Horizon is probably my biggest inspiration; they always try out new stuff and their sound design is on another level.

  33. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  34. A: Mostly I do post production and additional synth work on Rock, Metal and Pop songs. I also do full productions.
