Interview with Shlomi Abraham

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I'm especially proud of a recent project where I mixed and mastered an acoustic song written in the aftermath of the terror attack on October 7, 2024. The song captures profound emotions and resilience, and the final result exceeded our expectations. I'm excited for its upcoming release and honored to have been part of such a meaningful and impactful project.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Currently, I’m working on a diverse range of projects, including mixing and mastering tracks for several artists across various genres. I’m also involved in producing some electronic and hip-hop music, as well as composing for film and TV. Each project offers a unique challenge and opportunity to explore new creative ideas.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: As I'm relatively new on SoundBetter, I don't have a lot of personal recommendations yet. However, I'm eager to connect with and collaborate with other talented professionals here. If you have specific needs, I can help you find the right fit or explore options together.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: I value both analog and digital tools, but I rely heavily on digital for its precision, flexibility, and efficiency. Digital technology allows for exact control and versatile processing, which is crucial for achieving high-quality results. While analog has its charm, digital is the backbone of my workflow for its accuracy and creative potential.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: My promise to my clients is to deliver a high-quality, polished final product that truly reflects their vision and artistic intent. I commit to clear communication, professional dedication, and providing a collaborative experience that ensures their music stands out and resonates powerfully with listeners.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: What I like most about my job is the opportunity to bring an artist's vision to life. I love the process of taking raw tracks and transforming them into something polished and impactful. It’s incredibly rewarding to hear how a mix or master enhances the emotional depth of a song and contributes to its overall success. Each project is unique, and being part of that creative journey is what truly excites me.

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: 1) How long does mixing and mastering take? Answer: The timeline depends on the complexity of the project and the specific requirements. Typically, mixing takes about 2-5 days, and mastering can be completed in a few hours. I always aim to meet deadlines while ensuring high-quality results. 2) What’s the difference between mixing and mastering? Answer: Mixing involves balancing and blending individual tracks to create a cohesive sound, while mastering is the final step that polishes the entire mix, ensuring it sounds great on all playback systems and is ready for distribution. 3) How do you handle revisions? Answer: I offer unlimited revisions to ensure the final mix or master aligns with your vision. I work closely with you to address any feedback and make adjustments as needed. 4) What if I’m not sure about the direction I want to take? Answer: That’s completely okay! I can help guide you through the process by discussing your goals, influences, and preferences. Together, we’ll explore different options and refine the sound until it feels right for you. 5) What do you need from me before we start? Answer: I’ll need the raw tracks or stems, any reference tracks you have in mind, and a brief on your vision and goals for the project. Clear communication about your expectations will help me deliver a result that meets your needs. 6) Can you help with creative decisions or suggestions? Answer: Absolutely! I’m here to offer suggestions and share my expertise to enhance your music. Whether it’s about arrangement, effects, or overall sound, I’m happy to provide input and collaborate to achieve the best result. 7) How do you ensure my music stands out? Answer: I focus on understanding the unique elements of your music and your artistic vision. By carefully balancing and enhancing these elements, I aim to highlight what makes your music special and ensure it has a distinct, memorable sound.

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: The biggest misconception is that mixing and mastering are just about making things sound louder or clearer. In reality, these processes are about enhancing the emotional and artistic qualities of the music, balancing all elements to serve the song's vision, and ensuring it translates well across different listening environments. It's as much about creativity and understanding the artist's intent as it is about technical skill.

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: 1) What are your main goals and vision for this project? 2) Can you describe the style and sound you’re aiming for? 3) Are there any reference tracks or examples you particularly like? 4) What is your timeline and budget for this project? 5) Do you have any specific preferences or requirements for mixing or mastering? These questions help ensure that I understand your needs and can deliver a final product that aligns with your expectations.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: My advice is to look for a provider who truly understands your vision and can communicate effectively throughout the process. It’s important to find someone who not only has the technical skills but also the creative intuition to enhance your music. Make sure they take the time to listen to your ideas and are committed to bringing out the best in your project, while also offering professional guidance and support.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: 1) A high-quality guitar for versatile musical expression. 2) A portable recording device to capture ideas and inspiration. 3) A laptop with music production software to create and arrange music. 4) A set of headphones for precise listening and mixing. 5) A solar-powered charger to keep everything running and connected.

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: My career path began at 15 when I started playing guitar and diving into the world of live shows and dance parties. I pursued a degree in music and sound for cinema, which sparked my passion for producing electronic music and scoring for films and TV. After studying mixing and mastering at one of Israel's top music colleges, I launched my own business. Over the years, I've had the privilege of working with a diverse array of musicians and artists across genres. I also ventured into hip-hop and continued to explore electronic music, driven by a love for creative expression and a desire to keep pushing boundaries in my work.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: I’d describe my style as detail-oriented and emotionally driven. My work aims to create mesmerizing and magnetizing music that adds a poetic and deep layer to each track, much like a character in a film. I focus on balancing elements to contribute to the story while maintaining a uniform and stimulating musical world that resonates powerfully with listeners.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I’d love to work with NF. His raw, honest lyrics and powerful production resonate deeply with me. Collaborating with him would be a chance to dive into his world and contribute to the emotive energy and authenticity that makes his music so impactful.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: One valuable music production tip is to always keep the arrangement simple and focused. Prioritize the core elements of your track and use automation to add dynamics and interest. This approach helps prevent overcrowding and ensures that each part of the song stands out clearly, making the final mix more engaging and cohesive.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I typically work on a diverse range of music, from cinematic scores and film compositions to various genres of popular music. My expertise spans across hip-hop, pop, electronic, and alternative genres, allowing me to adapt and enhance each track to fit its unique style and purpose.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: My strongest skill lies in sculpting a mix that not only sounds balanced but also captures the emotional essence of the track. I have a keen ear for detail, allowing me to enhance each element in a way that preserves the authenticity of the artist's vision while giving the song a distinct, memorable character.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I bring a deep understanding of sonic balance and emotion to a song. My focus is on enhancing the track's unique character, ensuring that every element shines through while maintaining cohesion. Whether through precise mixing or mastering, I aim to elevate the song's impact and make it resonate with the listener.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: My typical work process begins with understanding the artist's vision and goals. I then dive into the mix, focusing on clarity and balance, followed by detailed mastering to ensure the final track is polished, dynamic, and ready for release. Communication with the client is key throughout the process to ensure their vision is fully realized.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I work mostly in-the-box with a minimalistic and clean studio setup. I use an RME interface, Adam monitors, and high-quality headphones. My collection includes various guitars and oriental instruments, along with synthesizers and keyboards. I also have a range of exceptional microphones.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Rick Rubin, NF, Kanye West, Max Richter, Hans Zimmer, Arctic Monkeys, Pink Floyd, Tool, Radiohead, Air, The Archive, and many more — the list is too long to name them all.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: The most common type of work I do is music production and mixing & mastering engineering.
