Interview with AJ Huang

  1. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  2. A: I have always had a deep love for music, and being able to work creatively within the music industry as my career has been amazing and profoundly fulfilling. One of my favorite things in the world is seeing a project in its various different forms: from a skeleton outline of a song or a piece of music recorded on a voice memo to a fully fledged and beautiful work of art that I can say I'm proud to have contributed to. Music is all about expression of emotions and communication in abstract ways, and I love being able to help communicate that with audiences through the use of my own voice on my instruments.

  3. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  4. A: My strongest skills lie in my improvisational abilities as a saxophone soloist and in my ability to arrange and record tracks on the spot with very little prep time. Although I am fully able to and very well-versed in writing out full arrangements, I find that I can work very quickly hearing harmonies and new parts in my head and recording them on the spot in my studio.

  5. Q: What's your typical work process?

  6. A: My typical work flow starts with receiving the song(s) as complete as possible, having a discussion with the artist about what they are looking for specifically, and giving ideas as to how I may be able to add more creative elements to the track(s). From there, I dedicate focused time to writing/recording each part, editing and pocketing clips along the way so that by the time I send stems back to the artist/producer, all they have to do is drag and drop the stems into their session, add the desired effects to fit the sound of their song(s), and be totally happy with the finished product! If a client is unsatisfied or simply wants minor tweaks, I'm happy to work with them on that, and will get a revision to them ASAP!

  7. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  8. A: I most often find myself working with clients in two areas. One is to write and record full horn section arrangements for their original songs, and the other is to record saxophone stacks and solos on their original songs to give it more depth and a new color palette!
