Hi, we're a band but also a production and mix engineering team. Whether it's full instrumental production or mixing a completed song or album, we're excited to work with you to creatively bring your project to life.
As musicians, we have decades of experience between us working with nationally and internationally known artists (Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Salim Nourallah, Deep Blue Something, The Chemistry Set). Having built our own studio to produce Sub Lights, we're now offering our production and mixing services to aspiring songwriters and seasoned pros alike. We can provide full instrumentation (drums & beats, bass, guitars, pianos, synths, and vocals) to fill out your basic demo, mix your completed song or album, or re-envision your music with creative remixes. Wherever you are in the world, we can add some of the excitement and edge of New York City to your tracks.

It was a pleasure to work with Sub Lights. They recorded a lush, creative set of synth parts, which really elevated my song. Great communication, responsive to feedback and fast delivery.
Wonderful duo. Their music is a lovely mix of electronica and dream pop with dark wave overtones. And their production quality is just as excellent as their personal approach, which is friendly and impeccable. They're just the kind of people you want to collaborate with. Highly recommended!
Interview with Sub Lights
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: We did a pair of remixes for Are You Real? that came out really well. It was already a wonderful song, but the mixes really took it to another level (if we may say so ourselves).
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: A new Sub Lights record.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Yes: Are You Real? (band/producer)
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both, because they each have advantages and disadvantages. But digital has gotten so good that it makes the most sense usually (control of the sound, workflow).
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: That we'll do our best to be sure you're happy with the results.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Instrument production and mixing equally.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: What do you think of this song and how can we make it better?
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That it's easy!
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What is your creative goal?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Follow your instincts--if someone's style or vibe feels right that's the best indication that you'll be happy with the results.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Gibson SG, Macbook laptop, Juno 106, Nord piano, ATH-M50 headphones
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: We started as musicians in bands (guitar and keyboards) in the 1990s. (Wow!)
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Indie electronic folk pop
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: St. Vincent, because her music is great but we also are friends with people who have worked with her and they all agree that she is a wonderful human being.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: No matter what you start with, be ready to go with whatever feels right next, even if it means ditching everything else you did before. The end result is the ONLY thing that matters.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Indie (rock, pop, electronic, and country varieties)
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Instrument production.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Decades of experience as both recording/touring musicians and as sound engineers--along with an open mind to creative ideas.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: It varies widely, but often we tag-team projects, with Meredith exploring creative sounds and Stephen coming in for the more traditional, technical production aspects.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: We work in Reaper, mostly in the box with a wide variety of top plugins (Soundtoys, Native Instruments, Black Rooster, Audio Thing, Waves, Valhalla, and more), with some select outboard gear (a unique MXR stereo compressor, a Dolby Type A unit), and Kali monitors. In addition to multiple synth plugins, we have an original Juno 106, an XP-80, a Nord piano/EP/organ/clav, a Mother Moog, and a Wasp replica. Several guitars and pedals as well, along with sundry stuff (mandolin, banjo, lap steel), and a small collection of high-quality microphones.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: St. Vincent, Beach House, Spoon, Dave Fridmann, FKA Twigs, Shawn Everett
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Instrument performance, production, and mixing
