Interview with DavisK

  1. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  2. A: Don't overthink it and don't spend years on something. Less is more, and lightning rarely strikes. Every song has the potential to be incredible, but one must take care not to drown in such a possibility.

  3. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  4. A: One of my favorite projects was working as the assistant mix engineer on ‘Lord of Silence’ by the recording artist The Wicked Saint. The track stands out to me as a rare moment of creative synergy—truly a ‘lightning in a bottle’ experience that’s hard to replicate.

  5. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  6. A: At the moment, I’m focused on what I always enjoy—creating new music and mixing projects for clients. I’m constantly experimenting with new effects and techniques. Recently, I’ve developed a preference for using graphic EQs over parametric EQs, as I’ve found that the lack of visual feedback encourages a more intuitive approach. While analyzers are valuable tools, I’ve realized that visual stimuli can sometimes skew my perception, making it harder to trust the true sonic characteristics of a mix.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: I believe both analog and digital have their distinct advantages. Analog excels in capturing that classic, warm character inherent in vintage circuits and hardware. On the other hand, digital offers flexibility and precision, enabling the bypassing of certain analog limitations while allowing for the creation of unique effects and innovative mixes. Both tools serve a purpose, depending on the project’s needs. Therefore, my answer is both.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: My commitment is to deliver exactly what you’re looking for, without compromise. I’ll never push to change your project or resist revisions. My goal is to work efficiently and collaboratively to ensure the final result aligns with your vision.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: I’m passionate about shaping sound and creating that moment when everything clicks into place. There’s a unique satisfaction in blending instruments together and unlocking that ‘Ah-ha’ moment—a challenging mix transforming into a polished, commercial-ready track.

  13. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  14. A: One of the biggest misconceptions about mixing and mastering is that it’s quick and easy—the final polish rather than a critical creative process. While a one-week turnaround may seem long to some, that time allows me to test thoroughly and ensure your project sounds its absolute best across all systems. My goal is to deliver a release you're proud of the first time, with no compromises and no regrets

  15. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  16. A: Do you have a reference track you'd like me to work from? Is there a specific deadline for this project? And are there any creative or technical details I should know to better align with your vision?

  17. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  18. A: Clear and detailed communication is essential to a successful project. I encourage clients to share reference tracks and outline their stylistic goals upfront—it helps me tailor the mix to their exact vision. I'm here to help you sound your best, and the more specific you are from the start, the better I can deliver results that truly reflect your creative intent

  19. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  20. A: Yahmaha ModX Keyboard, MacBook Pro, Focusrite i2 Solo, Sennheiser 835 Cardioid, 100 foot XLR Cable

  21. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  22. A: I would adore the chance to work with Porter Robinson. I love the way he writes his music and even more so the feeling his music invokes in the listener. It's like a warm hug that is sung to you.

  23. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  24. A: I specialize in a wide range of EDM styles, from Rocktronica to Future Bass, but I’m always open to working across genres. Lately, I’ve gained valuable experience—and a lot of enjoyment—working on Indie Pop, Alt Rock, and Acoustic/Singer-Songwriter arrangements. I love exploring different musical textures and bringing out the unique character of each project.

  25. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  26. A: One of my strongest skills lies in gain staging and EQ. I begin by establishing a solid volume balance across all instruments to create a cohesive foundation. From there, I focus on the tonal shaping of each individual track—removing harsh or problematic frequencies and enhancing harmonic content to bring out the full sonic potential of the mix

  27. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  28. A: I bring a balance of technical precision and creative sensibility to every project, using tools like SoundID Reference and Slate Digital’s Virtual Mix Rack to shape immersive, sonically rich mixes. My workflow emphasizes clarity, depth, and consistency across all playback systems through rigorous translation testing. I’m deeply committed to quality and take pride in delivering results that reflect the artist’s vision while meeting industry standards.

  29. Q: What's your typical work process?

  30. A: My mixing process begins with setting balanced levels for each track to ensure clarity and cohesion. I then move into EQ and compression, shaping the tone and dynamics while carving out space for each element. To enhance depth and richness, I add harmonic content and apply effects such as chorus, reverb, and delay, carefully crafting a wide and immersive stereo image. Once the mix feels sonically complete, I conduct extensive translation testing, starting with car speakers, headphones, and TVs, among other playback systems. If any aspect of the mix loses clarity, punch, or spatial integrity, I revisit and refine the mix until it translates flawlessly across all listening environments. Only then do I finalize and deliver the project to the client.

  31. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  32. A: My studio setup is streamlined but effective, designed for accurate monitoring and professional-grade processing. I use Eris 3.5 studio monitors, calibrated with SoundID Reference to ensure precise, consistent translation across playback systems. For mixing, I rely on Slate Digital’s Virtual Mix Rack for its versatile analog-style processing. I also use FP Inspector to keep a close eye on frequency balance and dynamics. Together, these tools help me deliver clean, balanced, and commercially-ready mixes.

  33. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  34. A: Porter Robinson, Virtual Riot, Illenium, and SLANDER were the reason I gained interest in music production at all. I owe them a lot for inspiring my journey. Their ability to create massive walls of music that sound uniform and clear inspires me to this day.

  35. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  36. A: The most common type of work I do for clients is mixing and mastering music. I focus on ensuring each track translates well across different playback systems and that all elements blend cohesively to achieve a polished, professional sound. I take pride in bringing out the best in every project and love collaborating to help artists realize their creative vision.

  37. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  38. A: Not at this time.

  39. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  40. A: I began tinkering with DAWs and audio in general back in 2012, I wasn't very good but was I determined to improve. From 2012 - 2019, I pursued music creation, mixing, and mastering with a passion. There were many ups and downs, but eventually I decided music and audio was the field I wanted to dedicate my life to. I decided to attend Full Sail University in 2020. I attended Full Sail from 2021 - 2023 and obtained a Bachelor's degree in Music Production/Audio Engineering. While attending classes I collaborated with several artists and help elevate their music and mixes before finally graduating in June of 2023.
