Interview with Juan Ignacio Catalano
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: That every piece of music I work on is original, custom, done with love and thought.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I love creating. I love expressing myself and helping others do so themselves. I love the deep level of storytelling that you can achieve throughout a musical piece. I love music's sheer beauty and color.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Be clear on your ideas, and what you are trying to convey. Work with references. When expressing what you are looking for, provide every last bit of information that you can!
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I love working with animators. I love the different styles each animator has, and how they convey it in their art. It is amazing.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Cinematic, orchestral, electronic, beats, jazz, pop, corporate or even 8bit as well.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Composition. I am very focused, detail-oriented and I write memorable, beautiful melodies. My production skills are very important as well, since they help me bring the music to life.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I am inspired by authentic and creative music composers. I recently listened to Rob Simonsen's score in "The Whale" and it caught my attention.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Producing, scoring and composing to video! Most of the time recording, mixing and mastering the score as well.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Give your music some time. Let it rest after working on it for a few hours, get your ears off of it and then listen again. Most times you will notice things you had grown used to over the hours.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Melodic, original, memorable. The way in which those qualities are portrayed usually depends on the style of music I feel the piece should have. Sometimes I'll write for orchestra and make it sound more colorful, Neo-classical. Other times it will be darker, deeper, more Romantic. If I feel the mood should be jazzy then it'll be a Jazz piece, or even a Hip-Hop beat if it calls for it. I just try to keep it coherent, and musical.
