Interview with Tate McDowell
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I will always provide to the best of my ability, and output only the highest of quality deliverables. When you choose to work with me, you will know you are getting the same quality services the best in the industry get.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: For producer services I may ask- What is the overall goal with your project? and What kind of role do you envision me playing?
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I have been working in DAWs and interested in recording ever since early high school. I moved to LA 2 months after graduating and enrolled in a 6 month audio corse and crossed my fingers it would work. The first 2 years of LA were very rough and consisted of a-lot of free work and shady internships. On the contrary one notable internship from this time was at 4th street recording in Santa Monica. I worked there on an off for over a year, and although I knew the place wasn't a good fit for me long term, I was grateful it kept me involved. After experiencing my first real burnout I had to leave 4th street Recording. I sent resumes everywhere in LA to no luck. Had multiple promising interviews at established studios, all rejections. Long story short I gave up, and almost got enrolled in school again but got the call last minute for another interview, at Henson Recording Studios. This time I got hired and spent my next 4 years working my way up, learning and experiencing at the highest of levels. I quickly was promoted to doing session work and eventually to staff engineer. Fast forward a bit and eventually even at Henson I started learning less and becoming more comfortable and even burning out again. I quit after 4 years of legendary times at a legendary studio. Shortly after, I got in contact with Coldplay and have been doing lots of various work with them for the past 3 years in various locations around the US. Now, among everything else I enjoy picking up fun and engaging freelance work, its great connecting with new people and I am always excited to see what is next!
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I have a trained ear, and lot of professional experience providing AAA high-quality deliverables. I can help you move from Point A to Point B within your project in the most effective and professional manner.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: I forgot who said this, but it applies equally in the kitchen as it does in the studio. "Cook like an Italian, using high quality ingredients and passing them through the kitchen quickly"
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: When you walk into my studio you probably will first notice a gentle smell of Palos-santo in the air. Each wall has different lighting, and out of the window is a beautiful desert landscape. The studios heart is based around a Maxed out Mac Mini, and an Apollo interface. Together they are a workhorse and have always kept up with whatever my studio needs. I have lots of various guitars, instruments, and toys, with a giant library of plug-ins and sounds from over a decade of collecting. The room has been professionally treated acoustically, and has a nice tight sound. If you look around the room you will find interesting art and gem stones, and if you look close enough, a few hidden treasures.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Daft Punk, The Weeknd, Anderson Paak, Kendrick Lamar, Tame Impala, Doja Cat, to name a few. A handful of producers that I look up would be; Brian Eno, Max Martin and Frank Dukes.
