Interview with daev
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: Im especially proud of having worked on a song called Soft Spoken, it was the first track that I produced that got over 100k streams on spotify, and was also my first spotify editorial playlist placement.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: A beattape!
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Although I love messing around with analog gear, digital is just much faster, and easier to operate.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I promise to not give up on a track until it is to your liking.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: That I get to do what I love.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That you need a degree for this, so many of the world's biggest producers have no 'formal education' on music.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: Why are you an artist? What's inspiring you right now?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Be very vocal and specific about what you want !! Don't be afraid to give me feedback !!
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: 1. Computer 2. Mouse (i hate trackpads) 3. Mousepad 4. SP404 5. Headphones
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: Currently taking a gap year to pursue music full time. Ive been doing this whole music producer thing for the better part of 4 years now.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Introspective, Abstract, Clean, Easy to swallow.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Ben Beal, he bascially started my production career.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: 1. expensive gear will not make you a better producer 2. don't be afraid to have contrarian ideas and to do things the 'wrong' way. 3. listen to alot of different music
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Lo-fi / Rap
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Making a track cohesive.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: tight production.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I like to talk to the artist first, get to know them a little, and pick their mind on whats currently inspiring them. I then spend an hour creating a visual and sonic palette based on our conversation. This helps me later create a beat thats more aligned with what they're currently feeling.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: Im currently working out of a bedroom studio equipped with the following -Yamaha HS5 -SP404 MK2 -Arturia Minilab mk2 -Audio Technica ATH-M50X -FL Studio 21
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Wun Two, Elijah Who, LAUSEE THE CAT, Nujabes, Jinsang, FloFilz, too many to name.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I usually make custom beats for my clients, they send me what's currently inspiring them (could be a movie, a color, an artwork, a feeling etc) and I make something based on that.
