My aproach on music is "listening-feeling and feeling-listening".
Hi! I'm Joan Bernaus, Recording and Mixing Engineer, Producer and Musician. I've worked in the music industry since 2010.
Recording, mixing, composing, editing and cleaning audio is my daily life.
Good communication with the people I work with is very valuable for me and for the final result of the work.
Furthermore, knowing the message and the emotions that you want to transmit on your songs is key for me when it comes to getting down to work and achieving good results. I'll be happy to hear what you need to take your music where you want it and I'll do my best to make it happen!
I'd love to hear about your project. Click the 'Contact' button above to get in touch.

Interview with Joan Bernaus
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: Fortunately I feel very proud of all the projects I have worked on because in each one of them I have been able to contribute to the good development of the work. And in most cases, both the client/artist and I are satisfied and happy with the results. But just to name a few: Ananda Massa, Santa Indolència, Hug, Wildekho, Malaka. Boiximans. For example, with the project of Ananda Massa I had many roles such as; producer, arranger, guitarist, bassist, synths, singer, beat maker, recording and mixing engineer.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I have recently finished working on a production of 3 songs by the artist Hug. Where the artist had recorded the drums and some guide tracks. So my job was to organize a little, carry out the recording sessions so that the artist could record the rest of the elements and then I mixed each song. A very nice adventure.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: I'm new on this platform, so not yet but I'm sure I will know a bunch of good colleagues in the near future.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both environments bring their qualities, so I definitely choose both.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: My promise is that with good communication we will always achieve good results.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: When clients are moved to hear the final result of the work. That feeling is indescribable.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: I don't find any common questions from my clients. They are always questions according to each unique situation.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That I do magic, and the truth is that I don't do magic. I put a lot of effort into every task I commit to. From editing to mixing and everything in between.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: 1) What do you want to transmit with this/these song/s? 2) What made you write it? (feelings, emotions, experiences...) 3) What are your inspirations, in any artistic discipline?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: May they feel completely free and open to speak or express everything they believe is necessary for the good of their artistic work.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: 1) Recorder/Laptop 2) A good pair of speakers 3) Comfortable headphones 4) Guitar 5) Keyboard (midi controller)
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started with music from the bodily sensation of listening and feeling the vibration of an electric guitar plugged into an amplifier. Then I learned to listen to the bass and it became my main instrument. From the composition and production of music in bands I decided to study sound engineering at SAE Barcelona (2009). Then I studied music therapy in Argentina, and music at the conservatory of modern music and Jazz, again in Barcelona. And finally I invested in equipment and built several studios. I have been recording, mixing, editing and composing music professionally since 2010.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Organic, elegant, bold and always being respectful of the needs of the songs.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would like to work with Marilina Bertoldi, because she's is an amazing artist and the way she expresses herself both with her voice and the instruments resonates a lot with me.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Hearing rest
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Rock, Pop, Alternative, Folk, Funk Rock, Electronic.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Zoomig in and out to hear the small details and the full picture of each production.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I bring special care to the emotions and experiences of the artists, because they are what made their creation possible. Through this care, my goal is that the message of each song is transmitted from the sender (the artist) to the receiver (the listener).
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: First, have good communication with customers. Ask them what they are looking for or want for their songs. Then I listen to the material to work on. I summarize my listening with the client and we decide together how we will move forward.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I work in a hybrid way, both as in the box and with analog hardware, depending on the needs of every song. The converters I use are the Universal Audio Apollo 8 and Apollo Twin. Mainly working with Logic Pro X, and secondly Pro Tools.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: All those who work on their art from their most honest emotions
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I primarily listen to their needs and accordingly offer different suggestions to achieve solid goals. It depends on each task; mixing, editing, production, recording, etc. But always with that philosophy.
