Interview with Michael's Music Productions
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I get to make amazing music sound even better
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: After playing some piano and guitar I found that bass (and a bit later double bass) was my instrument. Through playing I got interested in all the technical stuff on and around the stage. In 1999 I started to professionally work as an live sound engineer in Jazz and world music clubs in Utrecht, the Netherlands. Through live recordings I moved more and more into the studio. From 2007 till 2013 I worked in various studios in St. Petersburg, Russia. Since 2014 I have my own mix room in Bamberg, Germany and do recordings on location or in a studio of choice, depending on the project.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I try not to put my stamp on the music, but let it be the best version of itself.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Be confident in yourself. It's your music so if you feel good about a part or a sound, it's good! Of course we all have our heroes, but in the end people will want to hear you in your music, otherwise they might as well listen to someone else's.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Not at the moment, I just got here.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Either, nowadays one doesn't sound better than the other, just different, I can make it sound like it should with either (or both)
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Find someone that you are comfortable with and trust working together.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: my laptop, my kensington trackball, my UA apollo interface, 2 monitor speakers and an electric power generator :)
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Jazz and world music, also folk or acoustic.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: First is always communication with the artist, what is their vision for the song(s). Then I organize my session so that I can mix creatively without being distracted by technical stuff. Then I listen to the reference(s) and/or the rough mix and plan what I want to achieve. Then I mix! After the artist has heard the mix I am of course happy to do mix revisions if requested.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I work in Pro Tools on a C|24 controller. I mix in stereo,
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Mixing
