Interview with Ariel Perchuk

Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I am currently working on several client projects and also on some personal jazz/rock fusion productions.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both, because I love mixing the best of both worlds.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I will always try to enhance and take their song/production to the next level.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: What I like most is that I can do it managing my own schedule, and I can do it calmly in my studio, which is where I get my greatest inspiration.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: They usually ask me if I can record, arrange, or compose certain keyboard parts or solos for their songs. I always say yes when I can, and I sometimes ask for references if I'm not entirely clear on what I need to do. I also request the song's tempo and chords, if the clien have it.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: Some clients expect me to create an entire song from scratch using various instruments I don't play, like electric guitars, drums, etc., and also to do a professional mix, etc., even to produce a whole album for them. So I'm not a one-man band, and I don't do professional mixing either; this isn't the place for that :) Some also ask me for specific electronic or sound design elements that I don't offer, like loops, etc.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: I always ask them what they need to enhance their song/production. What kind of keys, arrangements, references, etc. Also the tempo, chords, etc.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: That keep everything in mind clearly regarding the requirements you will make :) So that we can start working with complete confidence and move forward more quickly on the project.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: -PC -Audio Interface -Studio Monitors -Synth/Midi Controller -Headphones
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I've been doing this for over 20 years. At first, I played in several rock bands, then I started recording in studios. From a very young age, I studied classical piano and later studied musical composition at the conservatory. Throughout my career, I had developed multiple styles, including progressive rock, symphonic metal, pop, blues, funk, jazz, classical music, ambient, film scoring, and multimedia music. I had recorded keyboards for renowned artists including Kenziner, Roger Staffelbach (Artension/Artlantica), Thomas Amoriello, Anthony Gomes, Timescale, and many more. I also founded the symphonic metal band Liliumdust. In 2023, I composed the score for L'ultimo take, Lorenzo Fossati's Italian horror film—a European Film Awards finalist in the Best Song category. More recently, I created a collection of short scores for Narosaki, a German fashion brand. I'm currently working on my solo project featuring instrumental metal, progressive rock, jazz, funk and classical music. (Around 5 albums, including EPs).
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: My style is somewhat eclectic and florid in the sense that I really enjoy harmonic and melodic development in all its splendor. I'd say it's not very minimalist and is more focused on the arrangements than the sound itself. All of this within the styles mentioned above.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: With diverse artists from rock, metal, fusion, jazz, etc. Who always have a clear vision of what they're looking for and want to improve their productions and take them to the next level.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Go step by step, clarify and organize your ideas first, do one thing at a time, and test it out constantly. Listen to it several times, and add to it little by little :)
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Rock music, Progressive rock/metal, Symphonic Metal, Pop, Jazz, Jazz Fusion, Rock Fusion, Funk, Cinematic, Soundtracks.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Arrangements, improvisation, composition of lines. Keyboard Solo Recording.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I try to provide what the song needs to reach its full potential and power through my ideas, arrangements, recordings, etc. I add everything necessary or requested by the client to take the production to the next level.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: First, I analyze the song or arrangement I'm going to do, listening to it several times, or practicing what I'm going to record or write, multiple times. Then comes the recording/writing process where I develop as much of what I had in mind as possible. Finally, I wait a day to listen to everything again and be sure, and if necessary, correct things before exporting and sending the material.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have several keyboards, including a Nord Electro, a Sequential Take 5, and a Casio Privia PXS 5000 piano with Smart Hybrid Action. I also have an Arturia Keylab MK3 controller, which I use to control many VSTs such as Keyscape, Omnisphere, Roland Cloud, Korg Collection, Arturia V Collection, Yamaha Montage, Nexus, Kontakt, etc. - Focusrite Clarett audio interface with 4 preamps. - KRK Rockit 5 4G studio monitors. -Akg K240 mk2 Headphones. - Ryzen 9 9900X CPU, 48GB RAM, and multiple SSDs.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I have many references from professionals who inspire me, some of them are composers such as: Hans Zimmer, Danny Elfman, Howard Shore, Allan Silvestri and keyboardists such as Rick Wackeman, Keith Emerson, John Lord, Derek Sherinian, Jens Johansson, Chick Corea, Vitalij Kuprij, etc.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I primarily record keyboards for various genres, including rock, pop, metal, jazz, funk, and soundtracks. I also create keyboard arrangements, orchestral arrangements, and custom compositions (mostly soundtracks and intros), as well as music for film and media.
