Interview with Alex Kilroy

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I was part of the band for "Dancing with The Stars" in Romania. It was terrifying to play all those songs LIVE on television and very rewarding as well. I was 21 at that time and I'm proud that I was able to raise to the occasion.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: I'm working on my first album.

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: I have worked with Sefi Carmel and Chris Brown both amazing mixing and mastering engineers.

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Both, I think that it's better to be like water and flow with the times.

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: That I will always do my best to serve the music.

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: To make art that lasts.

  13. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  14. A: I ask questions so I can get to know my clients better which will help me bring their vision to reality.

  15. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  16. A: If you don't have a clear vision of what you want, keep and open mind and an open heart and the answer will reveal itself.

  17. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  18. A: Clearly a guitar, a Swiss knife, a mirror, a flare, anything to get me off that island.

  19. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  20. A: I started singing as a baby, soon after my parents put me in Music School studying classical piano after 6 years of that I discovered Stevie Ray Vaughan and I've been playing guitar, singing and writing ever since.I'm 29 years old now so I've been doing music all my life.

  21. Q: How would you describe your style?

  22. A: Somewhat eclectic giving the fact that I was raised in Romania studying classical music, then I discovered Stevie Ray Vaughan at 13 years old which change my direction completely. I moved to America when I was 20 going to Berklee College of Music for the Guitar Clinic and the 5 week program. My dad introduced me to guitarist like Brent Mason and Johnny Hiland which made me study Country music for a couple of years, I then discovered Sting and lately I've been listening to a lot of Film Scores from composers such as Hans Zimmer, Danny Elfman, John Williams and Howard Shore. I'm a combination of all that.

  23. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  24. A: Sting. His songwriting skills are impeccable, so is his playing and singing. He managed to create very simple and memorable melodies on very intricate and interesting chord changes. He's definitely a master of his craft and I would like to work with him and witness his genius first hand.

  25. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  26. A: Serve the song, not yourself and as Quincy Jones said "Check your Ego at the door"

  27. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  28. A: I usually work on Blues, Rock, Pop songs. Lately I started working on Cinematic music.

  29. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  30. A: Being honest with myself

  31. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  32. A: Authenticity

  33. Q: What's your typical work process?

  34. A: I listen to the song,I understand it and then I do whatever the song needs to come to its full potential.

  35. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  36. A: I use Logic Pro X with the Apollo Twin X for tracking. I record my vocals using a Shure SM7B, I record guitars using the classic Shure SM 57 or the Sennheiser e 609, I use my amps, Fender Twin, Fender Super Reverb, Roland Katana 2x12. Over the years I accumulated a lot of pedals some of them vintage and that's how I get my tone. I have two Fender Stratocaster, a Bluesman Vintage Telecaster, a Gibson Les Paul Classic 1960' Reissue, two Fender Jazz Bass, An Yamaha acoustic.

  37. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  38. A: As a guitar player I grew up listening to Stevie Ray Vaughan, Eric Clapton, Eric Johnson, Carlos Santana, Mark Knopfler, David Gilmour and many others. As a vocalist I was heavily influenced by Sting, Vince Gill and Chris Stapleton odd combination but that's what I like. As music production goes Rick Rubin is one of my models, keeping it real and authentic at all times.

  39. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  40. A: I'm always excited to meet and work with new artists. When I get presented with the opportunity to work on a song I make sure I serve the song and do the best work I can possibly do at that certain time. The clients usually ask for authenticity and that's what I deliver.
