Interview with SamuelAtoche
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I was told to work on the ambience sound of a christian film, along the way I was told to do the dialogs and then the entire sound design. Another one that was very exciting was when we needed God's voice for a group of theater actors.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Digital until Dolby Atmos can be imitated.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Being part of someone's huge effort. A short film or a long film is important yo them and the sound of their productions should be as perfect as possible.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: My video editor can also do it
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: How long is the video? What is your main public? Are you going to present it in a theater, streaming platform, etc?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: The sound of your video is much more important that you think.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: 6 years with small and large projects.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: With time I have become more and more detail oriented, focusing not only in the sounds of things you see on screen but in the sounds that you don't get to see on screen.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: Feedback until you are satisfied withe final mix
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Christian contemporary music.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Many times the only thing I ask from clients is the final edit of the video they will use, along with the raw recordings of the dialogs. After mixing the dialogs I will start with the ambience sounds and finally the sound effects. Foley may be necessary occasionally. For music, after receiving the project files, I try to do a rough mix based on volumes only, after that I star playing with the panning. After that the details start to emerge and the fine tuning of compression and eqing, among other effects that may be necessary. I usually have a few versions for the client and a few reviews after that, unti the client is completely satisfied.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: A couple of 6" speakers, a macbook pro and a couple of sennheizer headphones
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Every Hollywood movie is a good reference for sound design. Musically.. Christian musicians as Hillsong, Gaither v.b., Chris Tomlin, Cece Winans
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: Dialogue, foley, ambience creation, sound design. Musically.. Mixing, editing, pitch correction.
