Interview with Andreu Marquès

  1. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  2. A: I embrace both worlds. Digital provides incredible flexibility, accessibility, and precision, which are invaluable for modern production. On the other hand, analog encourages commitment and decision-making during the creative process, adding a sense of authenticity and character that I truly appreciate.

  3. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  4. A: I am a musician and producer based in l'Empordà, Catalunya, with several years of experience in the music industry. Throughout my career, I have collaborated with various artists, providing production, mixing, and performance services. Some of my recent projects include 'How Long Are We Supposed To Wait' by Au Rora, 'Nada Atrás' by Álvaro Belchí, and 'A Miami' by Tacho. My work is characterized by a commitment to enhancing the artist's message and delivering high-quality productions that resonate with audiences.

  5. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  6. A: Focus less on having the perfect recording setup and more on the core message of the song. A compelling idea or emotion will always outshine technical perfection.

  7. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  8. A: My main goal is to amplify the artist's message while prioritizing the lead vocal as the emotional center of the song. I listen carefully to the artist's needs and ensure every element supports their vision and intention.

  9. Q: What's your typical work process?

  10. A: I always start by having a conversation with the artist to understand the story or emotion they want to convey. After that, I request references and begin organizing the technical aspects: sorting tracks, adjusting gain staging, and defining the mix's depth and dimensions. I dedicate extra attention to the lead vocal, ensuring it stands out. Then, I enhance the instrumental layers, adding color, character, and effects to bring everything together cohesively.

  11. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  12. A: I work on many different styles. Maybe the common line is that they are quite vocal focused.

  13. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  14. A: My studio is a space designed for drum recording and music production. It’s carefully treated to capture every nuance of the performance, whether it’s live drums or programmed beats. I combine high-end microphones, preamps, and a hybrid digital/analog workflow to deliver tracks that blend seamlessly into a polished production. This environment allows me to not only record but also shape sounds with a producer’s vision.

  15. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  16. A: Daniel Caesar, Jordan Rakei, Larnell Lewis, Jill Scott, Andy Shauf, José González, Olivia Dean, Sampha, Michael League, Steve Jordan

  17. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  18. A: In today's world, access to music technology is widespread, and many individuals consider themselves mixers or producers. While this democratization is positive, not all paths lead to the desired outcome. I recommend listening carefully to the provider's samples and assessing whether their style and quality align with your artistic vision. It's essential to find someone who not only has technical skills but also understands and respects the message you wish to convey through your music.

  19. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  20. A: Do my best, no matter the time it takes. No compromises.

  21. Q: How would you describe your style?

  22. A: Vocal-focused, rich and with character.

  23. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  24. A: I usually collaborate with clients throughout the entire process of creating a song – from songwriting to delivering the mastered file. This includes arranging, selecting the sound palette, recording instruments (especially vocals), editing, mixing, and guiding the mastering process to ensure a cohesive final product. I also provide professional drum recordings, both acoustic and programmed, while offering a producer’s perspective to every project. Many of the songs I produce feature a blend of live and programmed drums, ensuring the groove fits the music perfectly. My approach focuses on creating drum tracks that feel musical, serve the song, and sound like they belong in a finished record.
