Billy Wonka on SoundBetter

Want an engineer who cares as much about your song as you do? I care about helping songs reach their full potential for emotional impact! I don't have a "sound" per se, though I do LOVE punch, weight, excitement and sparkle. My approach is to honor each song as a unique sonic world, only making choices that enhance the message coming through.

Hi, my name is Billy and I have a sonics problem...

I've been working in the music industry for well over a decade, engineering for producers Phonix Beats (J. Cole, Trey Songz) and Axident (Justin Bieber, Jason DeRulo) before freelancing and working with Timeflies and OnCue, among many others.

But who really cares about credits? How will I make your music sound?! Head to billywonkamusic.com/engineering to hear some before/after mixes and masters

Would love to hear from you. Click the contact button above to get in touch.

I love working with Billy. It’s been a serious pleasure ever since we were introduced almost 2 years ago. We started with one song and then he quickly became my go-to guy for my entire EP and almost all of my upcoming song releases this year. He always gets it right on the first try and I really trust his ear. He’s also a uick to respond and is actively listening for where something can be better. Highly recommend!

Interview with Billy Wonka

  1. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  2. A: Both. Digital is necessary and incredibly flexible and nimble, but there are certain things my analog gear does to sounds that I can't replicate in the box. I'll always be a hybrid guy.

  3. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  4. A: To honor your song. To make you sound more famous. To make you so happy with the result that you come back!

  5. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  6. A: Everything! Taking songs to their ideal sonic form for maximum emotional connection with the listener is one of my absolute favorite things in life, period.

  7. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  8. A: What do you love about the current state of the song? What do you think could be better? Do you have any specific technical targets (LUFS, sample rate, bit depth, etc)?

  9. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  10. A: Know what sound you want and have realistic references.

  11. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  12. A: Louder Than Liftoff Silver Bullet Wes Audio Rhea Audioscape Opto Comp Audioscape Golden58 Kush Audio Electra

  13. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  14. A: I have been engineering professionally since 2009.

  15. Q: How would you describe your style?

  16. A: Expensive. I like punchy, hifi music with big extended bottoms and silky smooth tops.

  18. A: 6LACK. We live in a similar sonic space.

  19. Q: Can you share one music production tip?
