Interview with Jacopo Mazza
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I'm writing the music for the Martin Lawrence nft walk of fame star campaign.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both. Analog: the recording path is so important. Digital: endless creative possibilities.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That you can turn a bad performance into a good one.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Take your time to get to know me a little. Let's have a chat and see if we're a good fit. Spoiler alert I can't do it all so make sure I'm the one.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: My yamaha U3 piano, my pc, a good pair of headphone, a mic and my Apollo.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: I'm a big fan of punch and everytime i layer sounds (for example on drum kick or snare) after patiently hand aligning the samples The UAD Little Labs IBP Phase Alignment Tool allows me to have an extra level of control over the final tone of the sound.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I know music very well and for me it will always come first. The gears and technology are great, but they're just tools to achieve a result, which ultimately for me is making music which is great
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have a control room where I produce, mix and record vocals or individual instruments. A professional acoustic architect specially created the acoustic project by making false walls and false ceilings and using the best sound-absorbing material. My main monitors are the Rasch Audio R03: is an incredible company led by one of the brightest nerds I've ever known, its line of monitors has nothing to envy to the most renowned brands in the world, seeing is believing. My primary PC was built by Italy's best audio workstation maker, Project Lead, and is a beast with 128GB of RAM, 8 terabytes of SSD, and the mighty 16-core Ryzen 5950x. My primary audio interface is UAD Apollo Twin Mk2. Recording-wise, I'm a big fan of Neumann and mostly use my TLM 103 for vocals. I also have a beautiful Yamaha U3 ready to be recorded. https://raschaudio.com/
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: I love many, many, many great musicians, arrangers, composers from Nelson Riddle to D'angelo, from Stravinsky to James Blake, From Joni Mitchell to Herbie Hancock as long as there is artistic depth and fine craftsmanship, there is always some lesson to be learned.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
