Marco Moeller on SoundBetter

Creative drums, percussion, acoustic live loops and sounds for your songs.

Hi everybody,

I’m Marco from Hamburg, a session and live drummer / percussionist. Over the past 23 years, I’ve been part of countless recording sessions and have played thousands of live shows. I’d love to help you craft the perfect drum and percussion parts for your song.

Once I understand the approach you’re after, I’ll dive into my collection of some of the finest drums out there (Craviotto, A&F, Ludwig, Sonor, Noble & Cooley, Yamaha, and many more), a variety of fantastic Istanbul Agop cymbals, tons of percussion, and some specially treated drums—all ready to go.

My 320 sq ft recording room is acoustically treated and sound-focused, with four freestanding acoustic panels that allow me to shape a dry or more open sound. I can record up to 18 channels through my Universal Audio Apollo interfaces, using Neve and API-style preamps (BAE, CAPI, Warm Audio) and 10 UAD preamps (Unison). I track everything in UAD LUNA or Logic Pro. Additionally, I enjoy bringing in percussion and sound design ideas—from a single tambourine to full percussion arrangements.

Communication is key. First and foremost, I want to understand what you’re looking for: your vision in terms of playing, sound, style, and vibe. My goal is to support your song 100% and help elevate it to the next level.

Can’t wait to get in touch with you 😊 .

Interview with Marco Moeller

  1. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  2. A: Finding and nailing every single note with the right sound at the right spot of a song. Find out and understand people’s vision in order to create drum & percussion parts they are looking for.

  3. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  4. A: Both do have their own advantages.

  5. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  6. A: I´ve been a professional drummer since almost 25 years now. I have had a lot of experiences in all kinds of different studio, as well as live scenarios. I’ve always been focused on playing the song, always focused on getting the sound, the groove and the feeling. A couple of years ago I started to get more and more into the engineer world, as I wanted to be able to record myself in order to develop my sound more and more.

  7. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  8. A: Get the sound at the source right first, always follow your inspiration and sometimes less is more.

  9. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  10. A: Pop, Pop - Rock, Singer Songwriter music, Folk - Acoustic, Country, Indie Pop, Soul, Reggae, R&B, Blues, Instrumental, Jazz, Electronic

  11. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  12. A: Song orientated playing, finding creative drum & percussion parts, consistency in playing and sound, being a teamplayer.

  13. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  14. A: Creating musical drum and percussion parts, that sound great and support the song a hundred percent.

  15. Q: What's your typical work process?

  16. A: First of all, having a conversation with the client to find out exactly what the client is looking for. Then starting the creative part, searching the right sound, starting right at the source: The right instrument in the right tuning and treatment. My goal is to support the song and find the best sound, groove and approach for each song.

  17. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  18. A: My main recording room is a small, dry and focused sounding room, where a lot of styles and sounds can be achieved. I am lucky to call some of the most amazing drums my own. I know every drum very well, so I will have the perfect answer for every situation ready to go. Right next door in the same building there is a bigger live recording room, which sounds fantastic and can be rented additionally on a daily basis. After finding an appointment, live remote sessions via Sessionwire are available. I record everything via my Universal Audio interfaces, working mostly with UAD LUNA.

  19. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  20. A: I´m inspired by drummers like for example Matt Chamberlain, Jim Keltner, Joey Waronker, Aaron Sterling, Ash Soan, Steve Jordan, Ringo Starr, Abe Laborier Jr., Steve Gadd, and a lot of more amazing song and groove drummers.

  21. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  22. A: First of all, finding out what the clients vision for a song might be in a conversation. After getting the idea, take a deep dive into my equipment arsenal to find the perfect sound, groove and feel for each song.
