Marco Moeller on SoundBetter

Real drums & percussion that make your track feel alive. I’m a professional drummer and percussionist with 23+ years of experience, helping artists and producers bring real groove, depth, and energy into their music.

As the house drummer for Late Night show Inas Nacht, I’ve performed with internationally renowned artists such as: Beth Hart, Laufey, Kris Kläfford, Matt Andersen, SYML, Lady Blackbird, Albin Lee Meldau, The White Buffalo, Tina Dico and countless more.

🎧 What you get:

- High-quality drum & percussion recordings tailored to your track

- Organic groove and feel that elevates your production

- Creative input (if you want it) or precise execution (if you don’t)

- Clean, ready-to-use multi track files

🥁 My approach:

Every song is different. I focus on what serves the music — whether that’s minimal, powerful, detailed or experimental.

No generic loops. No copy-paste drumming.
Just real performance, recorded with care.

🎙️ Recording setup:

Up to 18 channels through my Universal Audio Apollo interfaces, using Neve and API-style preamps (BAE, CAPI, Warm Audio, UAD Preamps). My mic collection includes Coles 4038s, Neumann SM69, Flea 47, Josephson e22s, United 47 FET, Lauten mics, a AKG C414, and classics like the MD421s, AKG C451s, and SM57s. I track everything in UAD LUNA.

🤝 Easy to work with:

Clear communication, fast turnaround, and a reliable workflow are just as important to me as the sound itself.

📩 Send me your song and tell me what you’re looking for — I’m happy to jump in.

Working with Marco was a brilliant experience. He’s incredibly quick, precise and very well organised, which makes things really easy for a producer. And I was also extremely pleased with the musical result. So this certainly won’t be the last time I’ve worked with Marco!

Everyone keeps asking me who that drummer is that sounds so good on my recordings —
and the answer is, he's also a percussionist.
An amazing person, a brilliant musician, and someone you can always count on to deliver big time.

Interview with Marco Moeller

  1. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  2. A: I’m always happy to connect with talented musicians, producers and engineers here, and I enjoy working with people who are focused on making great music.

  3. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  4. A: Most of my work involves recording custom live drum and percussion tracks for artists and producers who want their songs to feel more alive, organic and musical. Often, clients come to me when programmed drums feel too static or lack groove and depth. I help translate their vision into a real performance that supports the song and enhances its emotional impact. Whether it’s subtle, minimal drumming or more detailed and expressive parts, the goal is always the same: make the track feel great and sit perfectly in the mix.

  5. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  6. A: I am constantly working on improving my skills as a drummer, engineer, mixer and human being.

  7. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  8. A: Often customers ask me what I need to know to start the process. First of all a sound file of the song would be great, so I can have a listen to it. I would like to find out your vision of the drum & perc parts, and like to work on finding the right grooves, sounds, vibe and feel for the song. What sample rate / bit depth will you need the tracks in? I'll provide these channels in my drum recordings: Kick In, Out and Sub, two different Snare Tops, Snare Bottom, individual Toms, Hi Hat, Stereo Overheads, Mono Overhead, Stereo Room Mics and different individual flavor Mics. I'll also send a Parallel compression bus and effect bus if the song calls for it.

  9. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  10. A: One project I’m especially proud of is my work as house drummer for the TV show Inas Nacht. In this role, I perform live with a wide range of internationally known artists in a fast-paced environment where there is often very limited rehearsal time. My responsibility is to quickly understand the musical situation and deliver a solid, musical performance that supports both the artist and the overall production. This experience has strongly shaped my approach to studio work: Staying focused on feel, musicality, and making quick, confident decisions that serve the song.

  11. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  12. A: A common misconception is that recording drums is just about playing a part correctly. In reality, it’s much more about feel, sound, and making the right musical choices for the song. Small details in dynamics, timing and touch can completely change how a track feels. My job isn’t just to play drums. It’s to bring a track to life and make it feel natural, balanced and musical.

  13. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  14. A: I´m passionate about working with positive, creative and like minded people.

  15. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  16. A: Find out and understand people’s vision in order to create drum & percussion parts they are looking for. Creating the right vibe with choosing the right instruments of my collection. Building strong rhythmic layers to enhance the song and shaping the vibe.

  17. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  18. A: My promise is to deliver drum and percussion performances that truly serve your song. With feel, musicality and attention to detail.

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Communication is king. Lets talk to each other and let me know what you're looking for 😊 .

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: Kick, Snare, Hihats, and some sticks. Endless creative possibilities don't require a big setup 😎🌴

  23. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  24. A: Pop, Pop - Rock, Singer Songwriter music, Folk - Acoustic, Country, Indie Pop, Soul, Reggae, R&B, Blues, Instrumental, Electronic

  25. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  26. A: I bring feel, musicality and a strong sense of what serves the song. My focus is always on creating drum parts that enhance the emotion and flow of a track. Whether that means keeping things minimal and supportive or adding more detail and character. With years of experience in both studio and live environments, I’m used to adapting quickly and delivering performances that sound natural, dynamic and ready to sit in the mix.

  27. Q: What's your typical work process?

  28. A: First, I have an in-depth conversation with the client to understand the vision and vibe we’re aiming for. Once I’ve got a clear idea, I dive into my equipment arsenal to find the perfect sound for each song. After dialing in the right tone, I record a few takes and can send you a quick MP3 (if desired) to confirm we’re on the right track. Then, I proceed with tracking the main and additional takes, exporting the files, and delivering them to the clien. — usually via WeTransfer or Dropbox. I’m flexible with revisions and always strive for the best results 😊 .

  29. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  30. A: What vibe are you looking for in terms of sound, style and groove? Would you have any sound references? What would be your preference in terms of sample rate / bit depth regarding files?

  31. Q: How would you describe your style?

  32. A: I‘m a song drummer dedicated to groove, sound, pocket and freel. I love to create acoustic percussion and sound layers on top of my drum parts to create depth, vibe and a strong picture.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: My strongest skill is understanding what a song really needs - and delivering it with feel and musicality. Whether it’s a minimal groove or a more detailed arrangement, I focus on creating drum parts that support the track, enhance its emotion and sit naturally in the mix. I’m not trying to overplay. I’m trying to make the song feel great.

  35. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  36. A: Both worlds do have their pros and cons 😊 .

  37. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  38. A: I´m a professional drummer since 23 years. I’ve been involved in tons of different studio and live scenarios. Every session and song is different and needs an own created world to live in. My goal is to find the right groove, sound, vibe and feel for the song. Communication is key and I like to hear your vision, ideas, notes and references.

  39. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  40. A: Get the sound at the source right first, always follow your inspiration and sometimes less is more.

  41. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  42. A: My recording room is a dry and focused sounding room, where a lot of styles and sounds can be created. I am lucky to call some of the most amazing drums my own. A wide array of drums, cymbals and percussion will provide the perfect answer to every situation ready to go. I can record up to 18 channels through my Universal Audio Apollo interfaces, using Neve and API-style preamps (BAE, CAPI, Warm Audio, UAD Preamps). My mic collection includes Coles 4038s, Neumann SM69, Flea 47, Josephson e22s, United 47 FET, Lauten mics, a AKG C414, and classics like the MD421s, AKG C451s, and SM57s. I track everything in UAD LUNA.

  43. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  44. A: I´m inspired by drummers like for example Matt Chamberlain, Jim Keltner, Joey Waronker, Aaron Sterling, Ash Soan, Steve Jordan, Ringo Starr, Abe Laborier Jr., Steve Gadd, Jay Bellerose, Charlie Watts and a lot of more amazing song and groove drummers.
