Interview with Juan José Noreña Reyes
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: Corazón EP by Tello. I was the producer, recording engineer, songwriter and session guitarist of the project. Im proud because it was the first musical release by Versa Music and I was able to contribute from different areas. Plus it sounds amazing!
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: Im embarking on the creation of an independent record label: Versa Music. For now I work with three artists.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Daniel Uribe. Amazing musician.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both. I think they complement each other. There are different tools that can help you to build a professional sound.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: That I'll do my best and it will sound the best posible according to their expectations.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Everything. I think creating it's the most satisfying.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: How much do you charge? My answer is "Depends on what you want".
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: I can't think of any.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What do you want? What are your references? What do you expect?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Be specific in what you want, illustrating either through references or a good mock-up.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: My Fender Stratocaster guitar, a Twin Reverb Amp, the Fractal Audio FM9 pedalboard, an Apollo Twin Inteface and a MacBook Pro.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started in music empirically until I studied at Icesi University, graduating as a musician with emphasis in music production a year ago. I have been working professionally as a live and session guitarist for about 4 years.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: I would define my style as clean, groovy, precise and genuine.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: I would love to work with Maluma. I feel that he is an artist that I admire a lot and that I could add a lot to what he does with my ideas.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Always make sure that the recording sounds amazing. Don't wait for the mix to sound good.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: I have usually worked on songs ranging from Pop, R&B, Afrobeat, Funk and Reggaeton.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: My greatest strength is my versatility, so I can contribute from different places to consolidate the project as required.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: From the harmony and rhythm I can bring to the song a bit of life and different atmospheres. Always trying to maintain the essence that the client is looking for within the project.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I like to listen to the whole song and try to understand the idea the client is looking for. I play a little while the song is playing, grab a couple of ideas and then structure them to record them.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I record in Pro tools with a Scarlett 2i2 interface. I have different settings depending on the type of song and genre to be recorded. I mainly use my fender stratocaster that goes straight to a Twin Reverb amp, then a LA-2A compressor and a default EQ.

A: I record electric and acoustic guitars of various musical genres. I write songs for different artists. I produce beats.
