Interview with COEN

  1. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  2. A: The biggest misconception about songwriters is that we have no real music training. On the contrary, like myself, I was classically trained in music and I know many other musicians who have at least basic music theory knowledge to build songs off of.

  3. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  4. A: I usually ask the following: WHO are you? WHAT are you wanting to tell in this project? WHO inspires this project? WHAT favorite keys do you like to compose in? WHAT genre are you looking to write in?

  5. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  6. A: I would offer the advice of: If you are wanting someone who loves music as deep as yourself and wants to be along your musical journey with you, you found someone in me; I will dive as deep as you let me.

  7. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  8. A: I would take my Shure SM7B, my MacBook (I pray for electricity), my MPK mini-keyboard with drum pads, my AKG headphones and a Native Instruements AI of my choice!

  9. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  10. A: I have been writing songs for about three years formally now, ten years in total as I started writing when I was in my junior year of high school. My career path initially started as a songwriter and has not changed, only grown.

  11. Q: How would you describe your style?

  12. A: I would describe my style as dreamy, wonderous and adaptable. I love being in a room with good energy and vibrations, no matter the genre.

  13. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  14. A: I would love to work with Ariana Grande; her album 'Positions' really inspired me to move forward as a songwriter and musician overall in focusing on the quality of music over everything else.

  15. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  16. A: Let your voice be your guiding key; your first instinct will always lead you to your true end goal.

  17. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  18. A: I typically work on pop, R&B, and hip-hop music, but am open to all genres.

  19. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  20. A: My strongest skill would be melodic composition (a close second is lyricism)!

  21. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  22. A: I bring a unique male vocal, a great point-of-view and an organized workflow to work effectively and efficiently!

  23. Q: What's your typical work process?

  24. A: Typical Work process does vary by client, but most often I have a full instrumental track to work off of for toplining original work, and a demo to start tweaking for mixing.

  25. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  26. A: I have a home studio set up, with the following gear: MacBook Pro, KRK Rokit 5 Monitors, Komplete Audio 6 4-Channel AI, MPK MIDI, Yamaha Acoustic Guitar and various microphones (carioid & condenser).

  27. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  28. A: Other musicians and music production professionals that inspire me include: Krysta Youngs, DemJointz, Timbaland, Bianca Atterberry, Jesse St. John, Ferras, ADORA, Ariana Grande, Max Martin, Utada Hikaru, Yerin Baek, Erykah Badu among more.

  29. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  30. A: The most common work I do is pop, R&B and hip-hop music for commerical music releases and for music synchronization. Recent clients include: Alaska Thunderfuck, Bob the Drag Queen, and BMG.
