Mixing / Recording Engineer

Thomas Bunio on SoundBetter

Mixing and recording engineer based in Paris, France. Over the past ten years I've had the pleasure of working with great bands and artists such as Tinariwen ( Grammy nominated for the albums Elwan and Amadjar ), The National, Amadou et Mariam, Bon Voyage Organisation,...

I have made my career as a recording engineer, working in famous commercial studios in Paris and around the world. This year, I decided to focus more on mixing.
I work mainly in my own studio (the one you see in the picture), I built it two years ago and I know it very well.
My experience has allowed me to acquire technical skills and to understand that communication is essential at every step of the process.
I will do my best to take your song to the next level until you are satisfied.
You could be a debuting independent artist or a major label, my goal is to make your music sounds great !

Interview with Thomas Bunio

  1. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  2. A: I'm mixing an Armenian rock band called Hey Djan that I produced and recorded.

  3. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  4. A: Do what you want and don't think about what people might say. Sometimes you are wrong, but who cares?!

  5. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  6. A: I work mainly on indie pop and world music, but I enjoy working in all genres.

  7. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  8. A: Understand the client's needs.

  9. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  10. A: Of course I bring a "professional quality" to the sound, but I don't think my job is to bring anything else. The song tells you what to do. I'm only there to accompany the artists on the long journey of a record.

  11. Q: What's your typical work process?

  12. A: Whether I'm recording or mixing, the goal is to understand the artist's vision, so I start with a little discussion. After that, if I'm mixing, I check the material I received. Now it's time to organize the session by listening to the rough mix, if there is one. Once everything is in order, I mix for about an hour, trying to get a good balance. Then I go into detail until I'm satisfied enough to let the client listen to the song. I wait for feedback and work on the mix until the client is completely satisfied.

  13. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  14. A: I mix 90% in the box and use my outboard gear for very specific stuff. I have a vast collection of plugins. I use Protools running on a Mac with an Antelope Galaxy interface. For monitoring I mainly use my Quested V3110.

  15. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  16. A: I'm a big Dijon fan right now and if we're talking about producers, I have to admit that Jack Antonoff is amazing!

  17. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  18. A: I mainly on the recording side but i'm focusing on mixing right now.
