Interview with Kevin Ambrogi
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Analog whenever possible.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Making music sound better.
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Have reference songs that illustrate well what you want the final song to sound like.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: A whammy pedal, one octave up or down, sure thing! Two up? Yeah, baby, I feel like Pat Metheny. Softube Console one, that workflow... My 1985 Auratone 5c, this baby never lies... My 5-string Gibson Les Paul bass... she's one of a kind. My Stam Audio SA67, as the venerable Al Schmitt wrote, I could only record everything through a 67
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started as a session musician. I toured and recorded as a jazz/allrounder musician for 20 years before diving into mastering. In the process, I discovered how fundamental the quality of your mix is, and I started mixing. I fell in love with Michael Brauer's multi-bus-compression approach and have been applying it to several styles with great success ever since.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Kendrick Lamar. Because it's Kendrick Lamar. Terrace Martin. Same...
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Electric and acoustic jazz. Funk. Instrumental. Indie Rock. Hip Hop.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: Listening.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I track with a selection of the best clones of tube and FET mics (U47, U67, SC800, ELAM 251, C12), I also have a large collection of modded and boutique mics (Oktavas, Cascade, and custom). I have 16 tracks, which I run through 2 Universal Audio Apollos. I mix with the Michael Brauer "Braurization" multi-bus-compression approach. My favorite DAWS are Reaper and UAD Luna, yet I am also comfortable using Pro Tools and Logic.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: Terrace Martin. Kendrick Lamar. Trent Reznor. Quincy Jones.
