What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
What is your rate?! The answer is, it depends on the condition of the recorded tracks I'm given. Sometimes I get sent a song and it is a disaster requiring countless hours and sometimes days of work to get sounding its best. Then there are times a song only requires a little bit of a polish and can be done in a few hours. I always need to listen to a rough mix before coming up with a fair mix rate.
What's your 'promise' to your clients?
I mix every song to the best of my ability no matter who the client is. My goal is to make your mix the best mix that I've ever done!
Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
I'm new here
Analog or digital and why?
Digital. With digital there are pretty much no limitations. You can easily recall sessions and settings. Plugins have gotten so good that one can get fantastic results from 100% in the box mixes. I taylor my mixing to sound very analog.
What questions do you ask prospective clients?
Is any editing required? I do not consider editing, vocal comping, vocal tuning, etc... as part of the mixing process. What is your vision and what are your goals for the project. Do you have a rough mix? Do you have any reference mixes? How much creative input do you want from me? What's your expected turnaround time? Do you have a Pro Tools session?
How would you describe your style?
Developing a character in a mix that is unique and right for the project.
What do you like most about your job?
I don't like my job until it's COMPLETE!
Tell us about your studio setup.
My studio is setup is fairly basic and mainly for editing and mixing. I'm currently running Pro Tools 12 with a ton of plugins.
What's your strongest skill?
My strongest skill is having the ability to exceed the expectations of the artist's vision.
What's your typical work process?
For mixing, I like to learn as much as I can about the the song and the intended direction before I start moving faders. I like to get a feel for the song by listening to the rough mix if one is provided. I also like to listen to reference songs and other artists recommended by the client that represent the style and sound they want. Before finalizing the mix, I will send it out to the artist to get feedback to begin the revision process if necessary.
What do you bring to a song?
Over 15 years of excellence. Throughout my life, I've been fortunate to possess a broad range of musical experiences. I'm a pianist, drummer, organist, producer, songwriter, vocal arranger, composer and choral conductor.
What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
The biggest misconception about what I do is that it's easy, that I can take a bad song and make it good with a mix. Also, many people think that mixing can be done quickly. Even when the tracks are recorded really well, mixing still takes a good bit of time to fine tune and make the mix amazing. I can only mix the files I am sent unless I have the freedom to add parts.
Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
I'm especially proud of my work on The Sims Family Singers Debut CD Project to be released in January of 2017 entitled "Unconventional Praise". I recorded the overdubs, did the editing and mixing. The record is absolutely amazing!
