Interview with Joao Casimiro

  1. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  2. A: I started playing drums at the age of 8 in 1996. I turned professional at age 16 in 2004. I graduated from a Brazilian jazz conservatory in 2012. I graduated in music education in 2017 from the Federal University of São Carlos/BR. I will complete my master's degree in drum performance in 2021. I am a professor at the Federal University of Goias/Br since 2018, teaching drums and ensemble practice. I recorded 10 albums and several singles. I played all over Brazil. I've toured in Uruguay, Argentina, Germany and USA.

  3. Q: What's your typical work process?

  4. A: I start by listening to the material and then I like to have a good conversation about what the client wants, preferably taking references and examples. To try to understand what instruments the client would like and various other nuances that the music might have. Only then do I start studying to record. Sometimes I can send some samples before recording the final version, especially if there is still some doubt.

  5. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  6. A: I have an isolated sound room for recording drums and percussion. I have a Behringer audio card, AKG microphones.

  7. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  8. A: I often make drum and percussion recordings for musicians around the world who want a Brazilian or Latin sound in their compositions/tracks. I can create from scratch or over some pre-recording.
