Composer and Music Producer. Best in creating beautiful Pop Songs with memorizable hooks and a modern yet unique sound.
I have been a musician since my early days of childhood and I have been working as a professional in the music business for over 15 years. I am a composer, music producer, sound designer, entrepreneur and artist. All of my skills have been achieved in an autodidact manner.
Being a composer I have written the music for commercials, games and even to parts of movies. My biggest influences have been film composer John Barry and game composer Michael Land. The lyrical approach to memorable musical quotes have been my biggest fascination ever. This way, I think in stories, moments and energy flow rather than in genres.
My work as a music producer is being reflected by numerous collaboration with international artists such as Alle Farben, Karmafauna, Kalif and more. From being the writer and composer to producer and sound designer, there have been many different tasks in various collaborations over the years.
In the past I have been working as a Sound Designer for the music software company Native Instruments from 2011 – 2014 in Berlin. The recordings and the production of sounds for various products have been my main responsibility. It brought me too many studios around the globe, including the famous Abbey Road Studios in London.

Interview with Julian Laping
Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?
A: I was doing the soundtrack for a Game of Thrones Exhibition with 15.000 visitors in Berlin. I composed the music wich was played at the exhibition and we made it to the NYC Times with that project.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I'm producing an electronic music album for a client.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Not yet, but soon!
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both. Digital is the main way we are working with computers so digital is always a big part of out workflow. However, being in a real physical connection to an instrument does something with you. Also an analog signal is not perfect and therefore adds liveliness to the sound.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: 100% dedication for the project. The best possible quality in cinematic music.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Music is my passion and I'm thankful that I can make a living from it.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: How fast can you deliver > within 3 days ;) Can you make it sound fatter > yes!
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What sound are you looking for? What mood are you looking for? What is the music for?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Know what style you want. Ideally have some demo tracks ready to show.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: My Macbook with Ableton Live. iPad mini with little acid synths apps. Dirtywave M8 Tracker. Great headphones. Moog Grandmother.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I have been a musician since my early days of childhood and I have been working as a professional in the music industry for over 18 years. All of my skills have been achieved in an autodidact manner. From being a composer for film to doing sound design for Native Instruments, I kept making money through my passion.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Lyrical and memorizable cinematic music with a modern sound.
Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?
A: Hans Zimmer. He has a great mix of classical and electronic elements.
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Every element needs movement. You don't need many tracks for a great composition and production as soon as they move and are alive.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Mostly I work on cinematic music for video content. A mix of classical and electronic elements to make the picture come alive.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I am very good with melodies and catchy hooks. Plus an intense atmosphere through my electronic music skills.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: Strong, memorizable and lyrical moments. A larger than life sound wich shines and sounds big.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I will get briefed by the client first. There will be a open discussion about the sound wich we want to achieve. Next is a layout wich I then send to the client. Once he is ready, I finalize the production incl. mastering.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have a proper home studio with numerous speakers, keyboards and a big arsenal of the greatest cinematic sample libraries.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: My biggest influences have been film composer John Barry and game composer Michael Land. The lyrical approach to memorable musical quotes have been my biggest fascination ever. This way, I think in stories, moments and energy flow rather than in genres.
