Interview with Espai Records
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Like everything, it depends on the project of the moment.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: They’ll have no problem putting on their songs as many times as they want and enjoying it.
Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A: They ask: Is going to sound like "XXX"? My answer: We will make your project sound as good as possible, taking this reference, but they are two different works, if it sounds the same we would be making a mistake.
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: Not understanding the project. It’s not about offering a certain quality, my way of seeing it is that we technicians have to feel the project as ours. If this doesn’t happen, I’m not your choice.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What do you want?
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: I like projects, not fast fashion. I do the work in some days (a week max.), but I need that the project make sense, and that the artist believe them. I need the project to make sense, to be alive and to be taken seriously. I do it sometimes, but I don’t like people sending me a song, forwarding it and giving me a cold OK.
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I've been doing this for years, with some stop-times.
Q: How would you describe your style?
A: Dynamic
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: In every production there is a key element. Be clear about what it is to build your work around and do not lose its meaning.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: Rap, Pop and Flamenco.
Q: What do you bring to a song?
A: I have the ability to listen to a song for the first time without classifying it in a specific genre, however marked it is. Therefore, I provide a broad and flexible vision that allows me to explore new sonic horizons in the mix. Todo esto, manteniendo contacto con el artista para asegurarnos que la dirección de la mezcla entra dentro del marco de su obra.
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: The most common work I do is record (face-to-face) and mixing.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: First of all, I require a video-meeting (about 30 min. is enough) with the group/artist. Previously, they send me a demo of the song or idea that I hear before the meeting. For mixing jobs, I usually ask for a stereo file of the song with a previous mix or demo. At the same time, I ask that you send me the clues corresponding to the project. I make a first mix inspired by the demo sent and send it to the artist for review. I write down the changes you request and send the final version. For master jobs, I ask for a stereo mix, I make a first version and send it to de artist for review. I write down the changes you request and send the final version. For producing jobs the process is more complex. It is necessary to hold a video conference to understand the project and focus on what is needed.
