Interview with Esteban Mejía

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: I'm bloody proud of my music. It has been a long path. Making the music I always wanted, the knowledge I had during this period of time while mistaking and correcting my work, and learning how to promote, mix, master and everything nice is the best thing that ever happened to me.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: In my first mixtape

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: I don't :(

  7. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  8. A: Both, because a good balance of both gives amazing results

  9. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  10. A: You will get the coolest song ever

  11. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  12. A: The interaction with the customer and the creative process

  13. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  14. A: How much it would take? 2 days

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: That I'm not committed to the job

  17. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  18. A: Which are the references you want in the final product? What instruments do you specifically want? What is the vibe you want to give with the song?

  19. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  20. A: Be patient. I will do the job in time.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: My cellphone, earphones, a mic, my inteface, and my laptop

  23. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  24. A: I've been doing this since 2013, and yes, in August, I'm ten years climbing to the top.

  25. Q: How would you describe your style?

  26. A: Foamy, colourful and straightforward

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: I would love to work with Mark Ronson and Calvin Harris. They're the main pop producers nowadays. They are on my to-do list.

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Yes, have most of the instruments in phase and mono compatible, even some reverbs, so your music gets wider and less problematic when uploading to platforms.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: Pop music, house music, R&B, disco and funk

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Singing. There's no other thing I can do best than singing.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I think a lot about aesthetics in music, in rules. I guess I bring order to every piece.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: Usually, I begin with the beat; for me, it's so important that a drum beat be so catchy to get in the zone. Then, I think of a melody that can be a lead vocal, a synth or a bass line, and everything get alive.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: There is not so much to say, its just my interface, microphone and a laptop.

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Craig David and Mariah Carey have always been part of my music journey as a vocalist; when it comes to riffs and runs, I return to them. However, when I have to be powerful, I think of Luis Miguel and Lady Gaga, powerhouse voices. Kylie Minogue as a producing reference is such a great one because her music always hears so clearly and bubbly, the result of every creation I have.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: Singing. If they need a demo or a male vocal for their project I record either with a reference or by getting creative. When producing music, I usually ask for 3 or 4 references to get a beat done, so then I can work in the best beat possible.
