Interview with David Grijalva
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: I will work on your production/mix until you are happy with it.
Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?
A: What is your vision for the song? I believe understanding this makes my job easier and also provides better results.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Taylor guitar, Pro Tools, API 2500+, Prophet 6, Neve 1073
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Make sure you rest your ears while producing or mixing. Listening fatigue is real!
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have a hybrid studio running Pro Tools. I use the Dangerous Music 2-Bus+ for summing the mix. I own API compressors and EQs. I have all industry-standard plugins. Three moog synths, Korg Minilogue, Prophet 6, two drum machines, 5 guitars, and 1 bass. My to-go speakers are the Nuennam KH 310 with the KH 750 sub,
Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
A: I mostly do mixing but I also offer production services and vocal tuning.
Q: What are you working on at the moment?
A: I am constantly mixing for other artists, but I also produce and mix my own music.
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: Both. Both bring unique qualities and can be used for different things
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I like working with different song types, I love music so feel lucky to do this all day long
Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?
A: That mixing can fix bad recordings
Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A: Make sure you have a high quality production. Mixing can fix some recording mistakes but not all of them
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: I typically listen to the song, then try to understand the client's vision for it. Once I become familiar with the sound, I start the mixing process. Once I have a set direction for the mix I will send a version to the client for feedback and go on based on that.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: so many, its hard to list all.
