Interview with L13

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: One of my favorite projects I worked on is an album called "ZOMB" by Incognito ?. I was one of 3 engineers on the project, the other 2 are signed to labels, and/or work in a major studio. The project was a total of 33 tracks. I engineered 13 of them by myself. That was the first time I was able to directly compare myself to successful engineers, and 11 of my 13 tracks you couldn't tell which engineer had mixed the song! That was a great feeling.

  3. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  4. A: Progress! Every day I am working on getting better in some fashion. Some times its small improvements, but its better than nothing!

  5. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  6. A: Hopefully I will soon!

  15. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  16. A: The biggest misconception is that this is a easy hobby. Yes, it is fun. Yes, it is a challenge. This is also how I pay my bills, so it is work and I want to provide a quality service.

  21. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  22. A: If I had electricity on this island) 1. Computer 2. Microphone 3. Headphones 4. Monitors 5. Interface I can now continue making music everyday 😂

  30. A: A good mix, won't save a bad recording.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I usually work with Hip-Hop, but I am always willing to learn and looking to branch out!

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: My strongest skill is being able to know when something is too much. A lot of artist, engineers, and producers like to try adding a bunch of unnecessary sounds. When in reality, sometimes less is more!

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: I bring the sauce! I have the knowledge, and experience to be able to enhance your track to the next level. No more "boring" mixes.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: Typically, when it comes to mixing & mastering my process begins with making sure the vocals are presented in the right fashion! Making sure the vocals blend well with the beat, but stand out from other artist in the genre. Then I start to add in the extra effects that can really help make a track POP! If the artist has specific recommendations, I will usually start with those instructions. When It comes to doing features, I find the concept first. I figure out what message the artist wants to get across to their audience. Then, I figure out the melodies/flow I would like to start with, and build from there!

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: My studio is located in Las Vegas, Nevada. I work on a 2020 MacBook Pro using Logic Pro X, with a Rode NT - 1 microphone and Focusrite 2i2 interface! (Naturally, I also have LED lights inside the studio).

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.
