Awesome song and production from Carl. I enjoyed every minute working on the mix. On top of being a great producer, he is incredibly professional and responsive. It has been a pleasure working with him!
Carl was an absolute pleasure to work with. From the outset, he was super passionate and interested in the project. It really felt like more like a collaboration than anything else. I came to Carl with a quite a tight deadline and he was nothing but confident that we could get it done.
Carl did music composition, foley recording and over sound mixing for our animated short film and we couldn't be happier with the result. Honestly the ideal type of artistic collaboration. Can't recommend highly enough. Hope to work with Carl again in the future. Thanks Carl!
Working with Carl was great! He has mastered two of our songs and hopefully many more! The result was always of very good quality and communicating idea’s with him was super easy. A very reliable guy that I would recommend to anyone!
Working with Carl was great, it was always a lot of fun and he always brought cool and new ideas. I loved working with Carl because he was able to put what I imagined in my head into a song, and most importantly he was always reliable. I’d highly recommend working with Carl to anyone looking to get music produced!
Carl is the man! Technically, his results speak for themselves! Quality! Along with Carls great knowledge, he has a trait I personally have not found in many other producers / engineers I’ve worked with. He is very passionate and careful with your project, you instantly feel at ease with the level of care he takes in getting your project exactly where you want it to be. The difference in working with someone like this and someone who’s in it for a quick buck, is life or death for the project and final result imo. Couldn’t recommend him enough. Thanks for everything man! Rich x
Carl is the go-to Mixing/Mastering Engineer to work with. He mastered a project of mine, also we worked together in production sessions. I am always impressed by his work as it sounds somewhat special, with a touch he can provide given the vibe that's looked for. He's a very understanding, creative, practical professional which faces the process in a very smooth way, always envisioning the best possible for the music.
I’ve worked with Carl on several projects, and always been a pleasure to work with. He is responsive and very easy to get hold of, also really cool guy on top of that. We’ve done a few sessions together, and he’s my go-to guy. Particularly with my work with HAWKE THE BAND, where he did an awesome job of the drum recordings and production on the track Miracles. He always ads a new dimension of creativity while bringing your vision to life.
Interview with Carl Engstedt
Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?
A: I started as a kid playing piano and did prominently musician and theoretical music education until the age of 15 when my skills and ambitions for production, songwriting, composition and engineering started to improve. I went to music schools from a young age and have been experienced in many different fields and genres of music throughout my years in school. I did my first composing and production job for film production at the age of 17 and my passion for music creation gained a lot during that period in my career. - I had the honour to spend time in a studio complex in Sweden with incredibly talented songwriters/producers and engineers with much experience and profiled credits with artists worldwide, which was a big inspiration and learning about the work. I moved to London in 2021 to begin my master’s in music production and have been credited for many different roles in projects since.
Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?
A: To always fulfil the vision and exceed your expectations.
Q: What type of music do you usually work on?
A: It really depends. I always try to stay updated with as many styles as possible as I find it developing and gives me more experience and ideas for the next project. I have the last year worked on a lot of Taylor Swift-styled pop music.
Q: What's your strongest skill?
A: I'm a huge music fan. I'm very picky and get easily bored when something isn't right in the song, which I see as a strength because I will always work harder trying to reach the vision. I get songs sent to me every week to give my opinion and thoughts as I believe I have a good ear and thoughts on a first listening.
Q: What's your typical work process?
A: Depending on the role, I always do research on the genre and artist before starting the project. For me, it's important to create a vision and get an idea of where we can take the songs and find a perfect path for the artist. I always strive to feel like a fan of the artist and create music that I believe is what the audience and market want from them.
Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?
A: Yes definitely. Arthur Indrikovs is the man! We have worked together on a couple of tracks and he is an amazing engineer and guy. https://soundbetter.com/profiles/743-arthur-indrikovs
Q: Analog or digital and why?
A: I love both. I prefer analog gear on recordings of vocal chains etc. When mixing I find in-the-box digital gear most efficient and creative in the approach and precision for the result.
Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?
A: Computer, audio interface, coffee, Moog synth (any of them) and obviously the Swedish snus;)
Q: Can you share one music production tip?
A: Always go with the gut. The importance is to make music that inspires you and makes you satisfied, side by understanding the audience and expectations from the market. If I ask someone about their opinion about a song, I pay attention to their body language and how they act because that always gives you the exact feedback. Advice and constructive critique about for example sound choices or sonic balance will most commonly be individual taste.
Q: Tell us about your studio setup.
A: I have two studio setups in London and Sweden where I do most of my work, with the ability to be in other studio environments depending on the project. I have a 2.1 monitor setup with the Yamaha HS7s and a Universal audio interface. I have a Moog 37 and the ability to record drums, guitars or other instruments. I currently use the WA-87 which is an amazing mic that I definitely can recommend for vocals or even other recordings. I have a powerful Macbook M1 Max with a big selection of plugins and software instruments from industry-leading brands, with the capability to take your music to a high professional industry standard.
Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?
A: This depends on the work and research I'm doing at the time. Jack Antonoff is one producer who has been a big inspiration for a while with his incredible productions and innovative approach to the sound picture.
