Paul did an excellent job recording acoustic guitar for my project. He sent me several different variations to choose from, which was great. Was also quick to reply and gave me both dry and wet stems. I highly recommend Paul!

Paul is an outstanding songwriter and vocalist. His skills when it comes to writing lyrics and melodies are always top notch! I love working with Paul since he always delivers doubles, harmonies and extra vocal stems which gives me more flexibility as a producer.

Interview with Paul Hawksworth

  1. Q: Tell us about a project you worked on you are especially proud of and why. What was your role?

  2. A: Quite honestly, I'm proud of everything I do but recently I toplined on a dance track that got signed to a chill house label (Paraiso). I have an ongoing relationship with that producer and it's great that we continue to work together.

  3. Q: What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

  4. A: Hmmm. Tricky one. Maybe 'how soon can you get it done?' My answer is 'a quick as I can'. I usually say 7-10 days to be on the same side but I can often turn projects around much sooner than that.

  5. Q: What's the biggest misconception about what you do?

  6. A: I'd say it's that you need an expensive studio or outboard gear to make pro-level recordings. In my opinion you simply don't. A simple home-studio setup with a few nice pieces of gear works great for vocals and what I do!

  7. Q: How would you describe your style?

  8. A: I like to be easy-going and friendly in communications with my clients. I'm 100% dedicated to each project and and my clients' needs.

  9. Q: Is there anyone on SoundBetter you know and would recommend to your clients?

  10. A: For electric dance music Emil Högberg / ay-Mill is an amazing producer! I absolutely love working with him on projects and I'd recommend him to anyone looking for a producer in that genre.

  11. Q: What are you working on at the moment?

  12. A: Dance toplines, collaborating with producers for music to release myself and also for film/tv sync.

  13. Q: Analog or digital and why?

  14. A: Both I guess. The tools at our disposal these days are pretty crazy! I think we live in a great age for making music.

  15. Q: What's your 'promise' to your clients?

  16. A: To give my all to their project and to work closely with them to achieve their vision.

  17. Q: What do you like most about your job?

  18. A: Being able to be creative and do it consistently.

  19. Q: What questions do you ask prospective clients?

  20. A: Do you have any reference tracks? Are there any lyrical themes you want to include in the song? When do you need it?

  21. Q: What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

  22. A: Listen to my demo reel and if you like what you hear, reach out. I’d love to discuss working on your project. If you like what you hear I’m sure you won’t be disappointed.

  23. Q: If you were on a desert island and could take just 5 pieces of gear, what would they be?

  24. A: Macbook Pro, Apollo Twin X, Neumann TLM 103, Beyerdynamic DT 770 headphones and Bear Grylls.

  25. Q: What was your career path? How long have you been doing this?

  26. A: I’ve been a professional musician for the past 10 years. I studied at music college and went on to play in bands and get work teaching music. More recently, I have been doing more work in songwriting and vocals collaborating with producers, writing music for TV\Film and their releases.

  27. Q: Which artist would you like to work with and why?

  28. A: Probably Ryan Tedder. He’s the complete package in terms of being a songwriter, producer and an artist. I’d like to learn from everything he does!

  29. Q: Can you share one music production tip?

  30. A: Use reference songs to inspire and keep you on track. Obviously don’t rip them off in any way but instead use them as boundaries to keep your creativity on track. Have the end goal always in mind and ensure that every element of your creative process is working towards that.

  31. Q: What type of music do you usually work on?

  32. A: I tend to work on EDM, House, Dance, Pop, Folk-Pop, and Indie-Folk.

  33. Q: What's your strongest skill?

  34. A: Creating toplines and writing songs to suit the client’s needs.

  35. Q: What do you bring to a song?

  36. A: Current and catchy melodies and a passion to create the best song possible for my client. My voice is pretty unique too.

  37. Q: What's your typical work process?

  38. A: I like to discuss the overall vision of the song with the client. Once we've agreed on terms I will get to work mapping out the song sections and coming up with initial melody and lyric ideas over the track. I then send the client a quick demo with a guide vocal for their approval. After approval I record all vocals (leads, dbls, harmonies and adlibs). Once the job has been marked complete, I will bounce and send the client a link with all vocal stems included. My average turnaround time is 5-7 days but I will do my best to work within the client’s timeframe.

  39. Q: Tell us about your studio setup.

  40. A: I have some simple but high quality pieces of gear. Neumann mic, Macbook Pro, UA Apollo Twin, lots of UAD, Waves plugins. I have a Martin acoustic guitar and for electric I like my Gibson SG :)

  41. Q: What other musicians or music production professionals inspire you?

  42. A: Lots of current topliners and songwriters. Also, Ed Sheeran, Ryan Tedder, Phil Plested, Lewis Capaldi, Lauren Spencer Smith, Becky Hill, Dermot Kennedy, Jamie Scott, Amy Wadge, Vance Joy to name just a few. Anyone who puts out stuff consistently and anyone who makes a career from writing songs.

  43. Q: Describe the most common type of work you do for your clients.

  44. A: It’s mainly toplining and writing a song over the client’s existing track, however I am very experienced writing from scratch and creating ‘from the ground up’ writing the chord progressions, guitar parts etc.
